Tire pressure question

i have a 00 4.0L sport. i currently have 31x10.5 BF all terrain tires on it. I really like this tires but have a question about what psi i should have them at. the tire says the max is 50psi so ive kept it at 40psi. but im going on a long trip tomorrow and thought maybe if i filled em up a bit more i could get better gas mileage so i filled them to 45psi. would this help my mileage any? i know that is way high for any offroading but this is going to be highway/open country roads im gonna be on. Will this cause the tires to wear fast or slower? thanks EJ

45 is WAY too high for those tires.

Easiest way is to chalk test them. Run a piece of chalk across the tread (single line, side to side) and drive it a SHORT (like in feet) distance. Chalk disappearing evenly across the entire tire = good. If the chalk disappears across the outer parts only, not enough air, inner only, too much. Try it with your 45lbs, I bet you lose the middle 3rd of the chalk but not the rest.

Best PSI for those tires on that jeep (unless it's built and heavier) is about 31 PSI. Maybe a lb or so more. Less than 35 for sure.

yea I would say for street driving between 30-35 will be your best bet. No more or less.
