I have only had my Jeep for a short time but I have had a blast making it my own. One of the things that I did not like about it was the all black interior. It's fine when you have the top off, but if you have the top on it is kind of dark in the cab and started to feel dreary. Who wants to drive the most fun vehicle on the road while sitting in a dark, boring black hole? Reminded me of a funeral too much.
After playing around on here and meeting a few people I came across Lilyeller and his Banana Blast inspired TJ. I knew that he and I shared the "a Jeep must be FUN" concept so I used his painted interior as inspiration.
Since posting pictures of it I have been asked by several people on how to paint the plastic pieces and I know Lilyeller has been asked the same... partially because I asked him myself. lol
So I will include in this thread what I did to prep and what products I used, as well as what I learned works or doesn't work.
Mine has a little key switch on the floor console by the shifter. I have an 2000 sport auto. You flip the cap up and use your key to turn passenger airbag on or off.
Ok, so I'm having my entire Jeep "dipped" I'd like to paint my interior to match. Do you think it's possible to find a similar pink? The Fusion colors are no where close... Just go black? I'm not cool with the "spice" color. My seats are going to be black (if they ever come in off of back order). Thanks for the help! And yes I'm aware my hood is still white- waiting for the new one
First of all, that's an awesome color. Second, welcome from a fellow Texan! And third, yes go black for the interior. I used Duplicolor for my blue accent parts...I'll bet you can find a hot pink to match. Finally, PM me for a custom made hot pink shift boot!
Got a lot going at the moment but since we had the jeep broken down for a bedliner mod, we decided to paint the dash panel. I used the dupli-color vinyl and fabric paint based on a diff write up we followed. I am not going to remove all the paint at this time and reaping with krylon...we'll have to wait and see how we'll it adheres.
I'll post some more pics when we get it put back in with the bedliner.
I will be doing this as well, hopefully will be starting this weekend with the tear down. I wasn't planning on painting any panels or dash until I read this thread! I am replacing seats as well...basically will gut the interior.
Would like to see how yours comes along.
You guys are going to love the difference! Just be sure to prep well! Scrub clean and wipe down w/ light acetone to remove any oils, so the paint will adhere best. Be sure to read the first 4-5 pages of this thread and follow the advice!
It takes a long time, but it's really worth it. When you're done, hit me up for the cherry on top - a custom shift boot to match your new paint job!
Perfect match so far, does have the glossy look, but I'm totally ok with that, should be finished with the rest (most will be black) by the end of the week
There is a horseshoe clip between the plastic washer and the crank. You really need the tool for it but it can be done with a small hook tool. And how in the heck did you get the door panel off without removing the crank!!!
Well im pretty sure you cant just take the cover off, its a whole unit. What ever fiddling you do with it you better make sure to completely un hook the battery.
Well unhooking my battery isn't happening, it's corroded, but how do I take out the whole airbag unit? I really don't want to tape everything off. Is there anyway to leave only the airbag cover and take the rest of the dash out?
You don't have to take your battery out...just unhook the negative terminal. And yes, you can take the entire dash out and just leave the airbag cover on, if you want. You have to take it off last, anyway. Everything else bolts on top or over it.
Got the cover off! It does come off for everyone that says it doesn't. There are two nuts on both sides of the unit that are pretty hard to get too, but it is possible to come off!
Wow, tjs actually look a little roomy with everything pulled off. Love the color. Plan on doing just boring ol black with mine. Any problems with rusted bolts?
Little help needed. Taking whole console off and airbag cover is hindering me really bad. Got the left side bolt off but right side by the vent has me stuck. Need help lol
Or how to remove the dash without removing that piece? Hadn't planne on removing it after reading thru here then got in a groove lol. But that's last bolt left. I think lol
Yea I fianlly got it. Finished the dash part. Gotta do doors and center console. Not sure that I like the dark blue on black but gonna give it the week to see if it grows on me. I think it matches the color of the jeep good tho.
That looks awesome man. I have the green exterior color and I am going to line my tub here soon. What brand of liner did you use? Looking at maybe doing a color like that to add more character than plain black.
