Floors

How did you refinish your floors? I recently purchased a white 99 and want to pull the carpets and go with Qudratec mats only. No more carpet but I want to protect the floors. I don't want to spend a fortune...want to do it myself. Thanks!

I just had mine done! LOL, 99 white TJ! I ripped up as much carpet as I could, it was NASTY! I could not get the undulation up though, the Jeep shop I use is doing the rest for me. They bought Rustolium bed liner. It has pretty bad fumes I guess and a 48hr dry time, but I know I'm going to LOVE it!

1 month later...

I have FINALLY finished painting the interior. It took me about 3 weekends to do as I have so much going one, but it is finally finished.

I must have used 3 cans of Black and 2 cans of what ever color this is, gray stone of somesort (All Satin Finish). Along with 1 and a half cans of the Krylon Colormatch Clear Satin Finish. I did notice Krylon has an Outdoor UV Protective Clear spray, perhaps I should have used that.

More to discuss later, heres what everyone cares about, Pics - because it happened:

I'm not jumping for Joy over the color scheme, but I am so much happier with it then what it previously was. The black comes out fantastic, and I used the DPBC on the Oh Sh** handle, top of Center Console (elbow rest) and the Door Handles. We will see if it rubs off with sweat and heat.

Some things I Noticed...This will not last forever.

  • Some of the black started chipping off as I installed pieces. Upsetting yes, but it is still better then what used to be.
  • The Krylon Colormatch Clear has a much different spray pattern, you'll see here I got a little too close and it left some funny patterns and chalky residue;
  • The chalky residue does wipe around so I will try and wipe it down with a slightly damp old tshirt, paper towels get torn up and leave residue of their own so avoid that.
  • No I did NOT paint the radio , gauge cluster, or vents. It is starting to get cold here, and I have had the jeep out of commission for 3 weekends already, an executive decision had to be made. I put it all back together in order to enjoy the jeep this weekend.
  • I will say Taping off the jeep is MUCH easier and faster. I did enjoy the experience gained taking the dash apart, but if I were to do it again I would rather leave everything in place and spray it where it lies.
Thank you all for the help and ideas. This is not a permanent fix that I thought it would be but I think it will last me a good year or two and that is more then I can ask for a whopping total of about $50.

Started reading "Cheap Easy Mods" a week ago; halfway thru "Tired of Interior". 5 days ago started pulling interior panels and dash parts, washing, acetone-ing, bedlining some, painting others. Been to Lowes, HD, and Wally World a dozen times; twice today.

Today I'm doin' it all: Washing, Lowes, acetone-ing, sanding some, bedlining some, Walmart, Kryloning some, Clearcoating some; all on different parts, coat after coat. Everytime I read a post that says "I got some chipping" I put another coat of Clear Coat on, up to about half an inch now, I think.

Meanwhile getting the grill ready for when Wifey gets home, all of the above mentioned items, and tryna watch da Boys and SD, and grab a swig o' Bud Ice when I get a chance. Gotta love dis forum!!!!

Go with the gloss Clear Coat on top of Rustoleum bedliner; matte makes it look gray-patchwork in some areas, don't know why. Gloss makes rough surface look very nice but not shiny, just a glistening look.

Thanks to all of you for posting your ideas and experiences! Oh, and I found out today that the paint can opener you get for free at Home Depot is great for pulling the soft-top flaps out of the edge grooves on the window surround. It's got the hoop on one end for opening bottles, and the hook on the other end. Hope that makes some sense.

Pulled the soundbar and dyed the cover, painted speaker covers. Played radio with only dash speakers......oowwwwwww....... My cat makes better sound when she hacks a a big-time hair ball while scratching her claws on a blackboard. Any recommendations for a *reasonably* priced speaker that fits in the dash speaker location? Gracias!

I replaced all of my speakers with kickers and it is spectacular. I have 5 inch round kickers in the dash (with an adapter mount), 2 6.5 inch kickers in the soundbar, and 1 12 inch kicker in the back. All brought together by a kicker amp of course

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about removing the original OEM seat covers so that you can dye them and save a few bucks:

Don't. Ever. :/

If you have the Sahara sound package in your jeep, then you have these pods in the front that hold a 4.25" round (i think) and a one inch tweeter. I just pulled the speakers out of that box and replaced with kickers. Sounds great! I just couldn't justify putting a speaker in an empty space with that mounting plate. Sound from a speaker in a box is a lot better then one hanging from a string.

IIRC it was with all the premium sound packages. I have them installed in my 98 (I added them). I think they were first available in 2002. That aside.... What speakers did you put in those pods? Looking to upgrade mine as well.

Thanks to LilYeller's creativity, I made a few changes to that drab tan that the '99 Sahara was burdened with!
(Dash grab handle is still drying!)

Igee seat covers here too. Had them for about 18 months and they still look great. Get them from the ebay site, it's a few bucks cheaper. Don't ask me why, I have no idea why they did it that way.

Follow the exact directions and use the exact products that Dragonii used and all will be right. Even if you dont do as much as we did, you will still have the same results, great looking dash and holds up well. I did mine well over a year ago and its holding up great. MOST IMPORTANT THING >>> Dont use duplicolor <<< Use the Krylon fusion or bumper coating.

Heres almost 18 months after I did mine. Havent done any touchups on it at all:

Problem areas:

where the keys hit the dash.

Kids stepstool to the rear seat (armrest).

Kids kick panel (glovebox)

As you can see, if done properly, this can be a huge upgrade and last a very long time.

Did you guys remove the whole dash or just mask a lot? I would be afraid of the little vapor from the spray can floating elsewhere in the cabin.

Skip the Wetsuit Seat Covers. You will be sorry in a few months. They get wet , they start to stink.
If you must get them, get a good wetsuit Cleaner at a dive shop and use it every time you clean your interior. Trust me on this. I grew up Surfing in Cal. And then spent 10 years in Seattle, Lk. Sammamish to exact , wake boarding. I believe the name of those seat covers literally means, wet ass ! Or something close to it in Hawaii

I removed most of what I could. Then I taped up the rest. No residue anywhere, worked better than I anticipated!

As for the wet ass seat covers, yea... dont do it just go with the same ones I had from IGGEE they are actually waterproof "Simulated" leather but by far the best covers I have ever seen. Waiting on a set for my new VT now.

I'm really interested in doing this with my 01! Would it be possible to do this without removing stuff? I don't have a problem with using an entire roll of painting tape and covering EVERYTHING with plastic. Second, I know it is my choice but I'm wanting to know what some other people thing, I'm gonna be redoing my dash lights with red LEDs to match the radio. The paint outside is some kind of orange. Do you think it would look good painting parts of the dash and doors with red or is it possible to find a match to my orange?

Here's the orange I have, I think it's amber something. It's a 2001 paint

And lastly I understand that the yellow and black is the paint you would want to use, but what is the can in the middle?
