Tired of your interior??? CHANGE IT!

I have only had my Jeep for a short time but I have had a blast making it my own. One of the things that I did not like about it was the all black interior. It's fine when you have the top off, but if you have the top on it is kind of dark in the cab and started to feel dreary. Who wants to drive the most fun vehicle on the road while sitting in a dark, boring black hole? Reminded me of a funeral too much.
After playing around on here and meeting a few people I came across Lilyeller and his Banana Blast inspired TJ. I knew that he and I shared the "a Jeep must be FUN" concept so I used his painted interior as inspiration.

Since posting pictures of it I have been asked by several people on how to paint the plastic pieces and I know Lilyeller has been asked the same... partially because I asked him myself. lol

So I will include in this thread what I did to prep and what products I used, as well as what I learned works or doesn't work.

So this is what my interior looks like.

Next up.... proper prep. Prep is the key.

Ha ya that wouldve been horrible. Should i paint the rest black or just leave it grey?
I think the grey looks ok. I will say the red on black looks a lot sharper. Oh and I would paint under the oh sh*t handle. Its just two 10 mm nuts. I think that would make it look more "finished". Looks real good though, not trying to down your rig by all means! :thumb:

Yes!! Duplicolor is some great rattle can paint. I also used the bumper coating on the crome headlight rings. I used duplicolor black wheel coating for my wheels. For some reason the advance auto stores here in southeast Va. are saying the wheel coating is now discontinued....not sure why...Like you stated before,"prep is key"...thanks for the interior paint ideas. I will be picking up some orange tomorrow when I get off work...hahaha

Alright so thanks to this thread, the girlfriend and I felt inspired to do ours.

When we bought this a week and a half ago the gray interior didn't really bother either of us. The more I looked at it though, the more I hated it.

Originally we were going to do all black, then at the last minute we decided to go two tone and did a gray and black. We couldn't be happier with the results!

I noticed what you have done to your jeep and you have really brought the life back into it. My jeep is starting to get to the point to where I need to bring some life back into mine. Ive been looking at you photos and ideas and love them. I happened to notice some interior photos. What kind of flooring do you have in your jeep. Mine doesnt have carpet in it but the paint on the interior is all scratched and rhino lining it is just too much out of my price range. Debating on recarpeting it or some other alternative solution. Have any ideas and what do you have?

Just taped them off. I thought I did a good job taping them but when I pulled them off I didn't have a sharp clean line. A toothpick and sponge fixed that right up though! Just make sure you pull off the tape after about 10 minutes of dry time. That way it's not set enough to stick to the exterior paint if you do happen to overspray.

You guys have inspired me, I have a '97 TJ, love it but the spice interior is looking bad. I've wanted to paint but have been too chicken. I've decided this is my memorial day weekend project. Just went gung ho and started taking panels off, got everything off but the main dash with the air bag cover. I can't seem to figure out how to get the air bag section loose. The upper and lower flaps are free, they're pop riveted at the seem to a stiff steel piece that appears to be bolted on the ends to the structural dash. I can't get my hands to the nuts to loosen so gave up. Has anyone removed the whole dash? am I assessing things correctly? May just mask and spray it in place just thought I'd throw out the ?

I removed the entire dash by I know some people have just masked and sprayed. I used a 10mm box end ratchet wrench to get those nuts off. I actually had my girlfriend do it because it was easier for her to get her tiny hands in there. There's a thread on here that shows removal. Just go search "dash pad" i believe and it should come up.

I took everything out but that part, it seemed like a major pain in the as* to get out and if I tried I would have had some broken parts lol. I just masked around it. U cant even tell I didn't remove it. Good luck, and post some pics!! :thumb:

^^ this... nobody will be able to tell if you removed it or not, if you have to do it just to please yourself then I cant help with that. I personally wanted it done in a reasonable amount of time so I decided to tape mine off and paint it while it was still in the Jeep.

Oh and off topic. Got a question, or two for Yall. 1. What temp does Yalls engine read after driving for a hour or so? Mine will get up to 210, 220. Is that the norm? And also, I have my carpet out, just metal floors. And they get hot! Is that normal? Thanks guys.

yes and yes. I am currently in the process of working on the heat thing so I will let you guys know what I come up with. So far I have tried some dynamat extreme under the tub but it doesnt dissapate the heat well enough. This will be my next test, but Im trying to find it in a larger amount and alot cheaper lol
