TJ Budget grille mod?? Is it impossible??

Okay I have been looking all over the WF and JF forum for a good budget, sturdy grille mesh mod for my beloved tj. I cant seem to find anything for under $30 bucks!!! I have seen jkers use these little square adhesive clips and zip tie the mesh down. Is that possible on a metal TJ grille? Will the adhesive not melt away from the heat?? Any other options for a budget grille mesh mod? I am going insane trying to figure this out!!!!!!!! Also color doesnt matter for when I take the grille off I am also rattle can bed lining it. Any advice is welcome from anyone!!!!

I went to the local Tractor Supply Co and bought some chimney lath that was finer and cut out a shape of my grille and placed it behind the grill and mini zip tied it to back side of headlight mounts. I painted mine yellow to go along with my lights and shock boots and in my opinion it looks nice and keeps out weeds and rocks. Also real cheap. hope this helps.

Do you have pictures?? Did you just drill holes and zip tie it? Would home depot have that chimney lath

the grille portion is steel...the surrounds are a hard plastic that seems to be pretty durable. I just bought a set - haven't put them in yet, but I am very impressed with the quality.

Since TJs can't remove the grill easily like the JKs here's my takes.
Version 1.0
Hillman Speed nuts, gutter guard mesh

Version 1.5
I used some trimlok, zipties, an gutter guard mesh.

Ziptied the mesh to the trimlok then pushed the trimlok on to the edges of the slats from behind.

Im ordering a different style of trimlok so I can attempt a little bit better look that should pull the mesh more close to the opening. And it'll be longer sections so it will run the whole length of the slats to look even.

I used expandible weldable metal sheet. Sturdy for the tj. paintable and the price is about 20 bucks at lowes. i ziptied mine in and love. I painted it black installed behind the grill. the best part was it simply slides down behind.

I am going to be doing something similar soon with a perforated sheet of aluminum, but I'm going to be installing mine in the outside of the grill slats.

My question to everyone that has done it is, after you've installed the mesh, how do you access your good release?

The grille guards that are $50 from crown have access holes in them.

On TJs, only the VERY early 97s have the hood release between the grill slots.

I can get some pictures for you by tomorrow, any lath will do I feel its just a personal preference. I just cut a rugged shape and curled any un-needed lath back and tin snipped it off. Didnt need to drill any holes or anything, but getting it behind the V-shaped cross member is kind of a pain.

Black mesh grille inserts

Couldn't get a picture, couldn't get the ebay seller to post one, so I coughed up the $85 and here it is. Haven't seen it in the daylight yet. I may stick a brush with black paint through the mesh and blacken the screws if they show up too much in the daylight. Also, may consider black headlight bezels. I wanted to hide some of 165,000 miles of stone chip damage on the grille and radiator, and I think this did the trick. Easy to install, they just snap in. I believe they will look better in daylight. Will post a daylight pic later if we ever see the sun again.

this is exactly what I was wanting to do, bought everything but never had time to install it.... was thinking of painting it white or black to match my white Sahara with black soft top

Black mesh grille inserts w/ no chrome are extremely hard to find. Mesh is stainless and they have a factory look, Less than 5 minute install. Delivered to door, no grille removal, no time and gas running around getting hardware and paint.
Add it to the list of mods under $100. Adding the black headlight bezels for $23.76 instead of ruining the chrome ones by scuffing and painting them.
