I'm looking at a 2001 tj sport and wanted some opinions on it.
4.0 5speed
Hardtop
120k miles.
All factory with new 31 10.5 15 tires.
Has rust coming through the drivers fender. And second gear is grinding a little bit.
I'm not afraid of rebuilding the tranny, probably needs synchros replaced. And like the looks of the mce flat fender conversion so the rusty fender isn't a deal breaker.
It's listed for $5500, low book is, $6900.
What is your guys opinions? Worth it? Would be for a dd, with light mud/wheeling. Jeep. TJ. Four wheel drive
I would walk away from it. The idea of "rust coming through the drivers fender" is a major warning sign. I would spend some time under it looking thoroughly at the frame and skid plates as they are probably also showing bad signs of rust. Rust does not just happen in one area, it shows up in one, but others are generally right behind.
If you are looking at rebuilding an NV3500, think in the realm of $1000 and up. Is the clutch real stiff, did you actuate the clutch with the door open so you could listen for squeaks? (I thought my trans was going, but it was the clutch so it was only $650 which was the friend of a friend price).
Secondly, never ever buy a used vehicle without a CarFax report. If he is serious about wanting to sell it, he should have already paid to get one. You want to know the documented history of where the vehicle has been the last 15 years.
If the rust isn't an issue it's a decent price. Like the above poster said, crawl underneath and poke at the underside with a screwdriver to look for soft spots. If there is more than a little surface rust, walk away.
I'm going to try and get time to look at it this week, I'll report back with what I see. I'll for sure check everything for rust.
