TJ Computer

Can anyone out there tell me what data can be recorded and accessed from the car's computer? Does it record speeds, RPMs, angles of terrain or anything else like that?

As far as I know, it only monitors the engine, fuel mixture, at various altitudes. It is meant to keep your engine running smootly, without mechanical adjustments.

Are you leasing your Jeep, and are afraid that they will find out what your doing with it?

hahahaha, no we aren't leasing it. We bought it a few months ago and there have been heaps of problems with it. The latest is the Dana 44 diff...it's pretty much dead. Obviously the previous owner has given it a fair flogging but the dealer we bought it from is more or less accusing us of mistreating the car. It's had so many problems that we've only done 4000k in it and the most four wheel driving it's done has been up moderate dirt tracks just to make sure that part of it actually works. I want to know if the computer would record activity from the previous owner and if so if it would be dated so they know that we didn't do anything wrong with the car.

As far as I know, it will not record all of that. Which is good for the one selling the vehicle, but bad for the one buying the vehicle. Usually one can tell from the underside of a Jeep how badly it has been abused. The skid plate will show multible wounds, and dents. Also look at the lower control arm mounts at the axle. They will generally show some abuse as well. I realize that this is late information for you. What kind of problems, exactly, are you having with your Dana 44? By the way, I am sorry for the problems you are having. The Dana 44 is a fairly tough axle.

In general, most computers only record the last few seconds of data and is continually overwritten. This info comes into play in an accident so they can check speed, throttle postion, braking etc.

Well the Dana 44 diff is stuffed..evident by the fact that when one wheel is on the ground, the raised wheel can still turn and it clunks when doing so. Also, there were metal shavings in the oil. Anyhow, the dealer is going to fix it. As for the control arms..they had to be replaced as well as the bushes and all the sway bar bushes. All of that should have been picked up during roadworthy check...yay. Hopefully, it will come back good as new or else... Well, the computer won't point any fingers at the previous owner so they will just have to take our word for it. It's been off the road most of the time getting fixed anyhow!

Off road'n in the garage

Well I am glad that they are going to fix it for you. That is the only way to handle that deal right, and have good PR. Let us know how it all works out, and hope that you have many good adventures off road.......not in the garage.
