TJ Cruise control

About the last thing I have to fix on the TJ Sahara I bought last spring (I'll put some details in new members shortly!) is the cruise control. I haven't been real concerned about it, but I've used the jeep more and more as a daily driver, and it would be nice to have.

Besides, things that don't work bug me.

fyi, I'm a pretty good wrench. And I own the service manual. Read it, too.

The cruise is completely dead. When I press ON, CRUISE should light up on the instrument cluster, and it does not.

I have:

Run the instrument cluster diagnostics... the bulb works.

Checked for codes there are none.

According to the service manual, the cruise switches on the steering wheel go to the pcm, on 2 wires, sensor ground and pin C32.

So I disconnected the battery, pulled the C connector off the pcm, and probed pin 32 on the harness with an ohmeter, the other lead connected to gound.

Nothing pushed got 22.4k ohms.
ON was no change, not even a flicker.
SET got me 4.3k ohms
RESUME = 8.8k
Coast = 2.5k
Cancel = 1.2k

My peabrain says "The ON switch is obviously bad"
And the back of my neck says "It couldn't possibly be that easy."

Anyone got any experience with this circuit?

If you have access to a monitor you can check your switches with it without dissasembling anthing.Never had to replace a clock spring on a Wrangler yet but have on other vehicles.

Thanks Terry.
what I have here is just a cheap universal code scanner, and all it will do is read and erase codes

In a storage lot in my RV I have an SCT programmer, it may do such things, I've never tried. RV is ford... is odb2 odb2, or?

I am getting readings from all bot one of the cruise switches, so I'd guess the clockspring is fine?

It would be nice to know what the resistance values off that switch should be. I wish that exoensive factory service manual would share that info, but it doesn't.

Have you priced the "on/off" switch? I would think that this would be an easy and cheap (often not the case for troubleshooting) possible fix for the problem.

I know this is a little off topic, but is it hard to add cruise control to a wrangler that came without it? I have a 2004 X if that helps.

The only way I could test it would be to know what the closed resistance is supposed to be. This is not a straight on/off switch. If I had the resistance, it would be a simple matter to get a resister from radio shack and jumper it to pin c32 and see if the cruise light foes on.

I'll price the switch today. But at least around here, it's "no returns on electrical parts."

Also, must remove the airbag to access the switch. I've never doen that.

What about a real scanner. Is there something reasonably priced that would run on my laptop and work with multiple cars?

I'm a little out of my league on this one, but two things:
1) Not sure about jeeps, but on a 99 ford taurus the cruise light only comes on when your actually using cruise control, which for that car is over 35 mph, not when you push the on button, and it turns off when you tap the brakes, untily ou hit resume.

2) On my 97 dodge ram the cruise control stopped working and it turned out to be a vacuum leak, the hose controling the throttle just fell apart. I'm not sure if this is how jeeps do cruise control, but it might be worth looking into.

Jeep Cherokee (XJ) Cruise Control Does not Work - Car Forums - Edmunds

"I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4dr 4x4 with only 54xxx original miles on it. The problem that I am having is the Cruise Control and the Horn does not work.

I do not get any light on the dash that says the cruise control is on or anything.... it just plan does not work. "

--------------------------
"I had the same problem, the cruise control would not engage. What it turned out to be was that my battery had leaked acid on the hose that run's down to the vacuum which is attached to the bumper, and had actually melted it apart. What I did was purchase a 1/4" hose about 6" long from Autozone, attached each end to the broken hose and taped it firmly with hose tape. It worked like a charm, I once again had vacuum pressure to engage my cruise control. It was a cheap fix and took me 20 minutes to do. This may or may not be your problem but you might want to check out the vacuum line and make sure it did not crack, or become disconnected, or like in my case, get melted apart with battery acid. "

Found this, might help.
