TJ Exhaust Downtube

I have a cat back exhaust system and header for my 03 tj coming in later this week and was wondering if it was worth it to get and aftermarket downtube for the exhaust. From what i've seen online the only difference is the metal its made out of, stainless vs steel, and the size of the tube is the same as stock. And they're not cheap either, 400-500 or more. Was going to go to a local shop and have them build me a new downtube and delete the two cats on top and put in a larger single highflow magnaflow cat instead. But is it really worth it? is it going to make any difference or is it just going to flow the same as stock?

Most people on this FORUM seem to think it is near impossible to improve on the "breathing" of the I6 as it come from the factory. And even if you do improve it in your real world driving, be it "seat of the pants feel", or more pleasing sounding exhaust, or perceived better mileage, it is "placebo effect", "should have got a V8"/ "disturbing nature/ too loud when off road" and "there is no way you can get better than 16mpg out of a TJ".

It's your Jeep do what you want....I like my noisy placebo effect TJ that gets better than 16mpg.....doubt you will get any encouragement to change exhaust the way you are describing.

Good Luck!!

not looking for "high performance" just something more efficent. Started out when i blew my rear u joint where it connects to the axle and it bashed in my muffler, so got a cat back system and then just got the header. Doing this for the sound but if replacing the down tube, along with everything else, is more efficient ill do it but sounds like i should just put the old cat an tube back on.

Don't waste your money. You have pre-cats and you don't want to try and delete those. Too much hassle and your jeep will run like crap. Not to mention smog issues, automatic fail. Now if you had an older jeep with a single cat underneath with the crossmember then I would go for it.
