TJ Front catalytic converter (california)

Anyone know where I can get a new front catylic converter (the two mini cats on the y pipe) for a 2001 wrangler? (4.0 liter) I got a quote from two different jeep dealers for $1,034 and $740. My mechanic suggested I look around as someone should have it much cheaper

umm really I would go buy a aftermarket one. They are cheaper and give you a little more power. I took them out of my mustang for sound and power. I have not taken them out of my jeep yet. Will when the weather gets warmer. You just need to get the codes flashed out because you will throw a check engine light. The 02 sensors will think your running to rich but your not. So you will not harm anything by putting a better one in.

I had my dealer replace mine for free. My buddy worked there and aparently there was a recall on the cat (1997). You may want to check that out, as I do not know what years it covered. I also got them to "accidently" break the bad O2 sensor when they tried to remove it.

Nater... acually I think it might be a federal or state law... I had two replaced both on my 1997 and the stealer told me that it was an emissions law the manufacturer has to replace it if the mileage is under 80,000. What was the mileage on your buddies 97?

Question 1 - How do you know it is bad?

Yes the converter, PCM and other emission items are covered uner a Federal 80k warranty.

Buffalo - My 97 had 139000 miles on it when I had my friend work it in to his dealership for the new cat and O2 sensor. I'm assuming they overlooked the mileage on my Jeep because my buddy was the parts manager. Worked for me though!

Unfortunately I have just over 90k on the Jeep so no warranty. No recall on 2001.

One of the mini-cats has a damaged catalyst. There was a rattle in it before I took it in to the mech. and the P0432 light is on so it won't pass inspection.

I'm going to go get this cat, I think, pretty inexpensive comparatively.
