Tj gearing?

Hey all. I'm new here and just recently purchased my first jeep. I got a 1997 wrangler se. Ya it's got the 4 banger but I had to start somewhere. It's the 3 spd auto; wanted the 5 spd but that was all I could find in my budget. I got 235/75/15 on it. I'm not really looking to go bigger yet its all stock far as I know. I gave up my my 94 ranger Supercab 4.0 for this and it's a little different. The diff says gears are 3.73. My question is that I noticed at 55 I'm turning 2500 rpms is that normal? Got an exhaust leak to so it sounds like I'm straining the hell out of it; I don't wanna damage what I've waited so long for. Thanks all for the help.

That seems a little high rpm for 55. I have 4.88 gears and I am running 2500rpm at 65mph on 35's

I'm not sure what the previous owners had done to it. I did see some orange permatex around the diff cover. Wonder if they regeared it? I seen posts about gearing on larger tires but not on what I'm running.

That is because your transmission has an Overdrive, his 3-speed automatic does not.

Jowen, 2500 rpms is about right for your four-banger, it needs those RPMs with the 3-speed automatic. Don't worry about them, I purposely geared my previous TJ so I was closer to 2700 RPMs on the highway.

Ok thanks for the info. Like I said different from my ranger. I've read about engine mods people have done with mixed results. Is any of them really worth it? Keep in mind I'm in northeast georgia so slight hills and rest kinda flat. Most of our stuff is red mud so I don't think I'll lift it.

Short of a supercharger or turbocharger, I know of no worthwhile engine mods for more power.

That's what I was thinking Jerry. I've read a lot on here where you've been very helpful. Thanks for the answers. I'm sure there will be more in time. So far I love my jeep. Saturday will be a week I've had it and spent a little of everyday tinkering with it. Had a few issues that the previous owner didn't take care of and made it seem worse to other buyers; think that's why I got a good deal on it. Any info on where to find the heat and ac control arms at? Two of them are broken; I'd like to have the defrost working on it.
