TJ hardtop differences

Is there any differences in TJ hardtops other than the vents on the earlier ones? Any fitment issues?

Any 97-06 top will fit. The only other differences are with the connector at the hardtop if yoi want to connect to the wiper and defroster.

Without the vent in the hardtop and I you have a tailgate Also ventless - post 2002 I think then you may get a whistle when you turn on the hvac because of being over sealed.

Also the post 2004 hard tops have a seating plug to help alignment and my 2000 tj doesn't. No biggie though the alignment pin is plastic and just pops out of the hardtop.

I don't have my electrical hooked up yet because of the plug issue but no problems of fogging etc.

The vents were moved from the hardtop to the tailgate... I believe that started in 2003? So yes, it's possible that if you have a '02 or earlier TJ (no tailgate vent) and get a '03+ hardtop (no vents), you may have a mild issue with the Jeep being over sealed. Either install some junkyard vents in a newer hardtop or swap out your tailgate with a vented one. That would fix the issue for sure.

The only fitment issue would be with the Unlimited TJ hardtop. Obviously too long for a regular TJ.

If your Jeep came from the factory with just a soft top, you would have to install proper wiring for the hardtop's wiper and defroster. Unless you don't care about those working. You also need to make sure you have a tailgate seal, which goes on top of the tailgate.

also the hardtops came with untinted or tinted glass.....tinted hard top glass was optional on the Sport and standard on the Sahara.

I'd like to know the differences as well. I got one with my jeep that I don't use and want to sell, but I don't know much about them to be able to tell the seller about it. Mine does have vents on the side of it, but the glass is out of the hatch. I sub'd to this thread for info thanks guys.

The 97-02 tops have a vent behind the side windows
The 03-06 tops don't have the vent

Then you have an alignment problem with the top or door, it has nothing to do with an earlier top on a later model...
