TJ/JK vs tacoma

Okay, my buddy is going to bootcamp for the marines, he currently owns an '08 cbr600rr. When he gets out, and saves money he wants to get an offroad worth vehicle. Me owning a jeep I tell him to get a jeep as they're amazing. He, however is torn between a tacoma or a wrangler (2 door of course). He's considering a tacoma because they're good, reliable trucks and he'd have a spot for his bike. Try to be unbiased, I know that'd be hard as this is a jeep forum, but should he get a tacoma or a wrangler with a trailer? Also which would be cheaper for basic mods such as lift, tires, parts, price ect? I believe kits for a truck run higher than jeeps? Not sure. Not to mention the yotas ifs. Offroad I know the jeeps wheelbase has the advantage, but what else should he take into consideration?

Thanks in advance

It depends on what kind of driving he does and what kind of comfort he wants. Is he looking at a 2 dr toy, extended cab? 4 door. My brother has a 09 tocoma and it is a nice truck, much more comfortable than a jeep will ever be, but it is not as good as his older one was. What kind of wheeling is he going to be doing? A jeep can tow a trailer with a motorcycle, a tocoma can tow a heck of a lot more. He needs to figure out what he wants his vehicle to do, and then he can make a decision.

I'd say wrangler just for the fact that it has solid axles. A new tacoma will have IFS.

I'd look at the frontier before tacoma but thats just me.. The Xterra is at the top of the food chain right now when it comes to ifs offroad vehlicles today that are still in production and the frontier is just simply a truck version of that.. So looking for a mid size offroad capable truck and it sounds like he might bennifet more from a Truck, I go witht he nissan frontier.

Couldnt have said it better, yeah the truck may be more practical, but the jeep should be way more fun to drive and is something that he could fix up fairly easily with repairs and such.

You'll need a trailer for either with a bike. No way you fit it in the bed of a Tacoma. A full size truck yea. But not a Tacoma.

I second the nissan frontier as a very viable option, get a 2005+ version though and the v6s are powerhouses.
Had a 2004 xterra(miss my first baby) and car sat a 2007 frontier for a month and fell in love with it because it was my xterra updated and had a bed.

I've been riding street & dirt bikes for over 35 years. While I would have no problem putting my dirtbike in the back of the Tacoma, I would never haul a street bike in the Tacoma. The bed is too high, the extra weight will drastically change the COG of the truck and the bed wall-height of the Tacoma is really low. That means, if the bike accidentally tips over, there's a really good chance it will end up on the road.

So, just for the consideration of the bike, I'd recommend a trailer no matter which vehicle he gets.

For offroad, the longer wheel base of the yota will be more stable for high speed off-roading. But with the SWB, the Jeep will go a lot more places than the yota.

First of all out of all the people I know, they don't really haul their bikes that much. So I would not worry too much about that factor. I mean how often are you carrying your bike around with you? If he is buying new, he can get a jkur and tow it easily. and be awesome.

I couldn't decide between a Tacoma Double Cab and a JKU back in '08. I bought the Tacoma and had buyers remorse for 3 years. Toyota quality is not what it once was. I traded it for my '11 JKU in June and couldn't be happier.

If I were him I would get a ford f150, a real truck not a piece of junk RICER! 3.5 ecoboost has 365 HP and 425 FPT and is rated at 22 mpg in the 4x4 models. Makes a pentajunk look just like the mini van engine it is. Oh and room to haul his bike and no need for a trailer.

RAPTOR! Can't beleive I forgot about them.. They are BAD A**! Won't go through as tight of a trail as a Frontier or Tacoma but they do good for what they are on the trail and in the open look out.. They were built to FLY

Yea they are kool
and unique trucks. The new 12 models now come with a LSD in front and a locker in the rear. But only a 5.5 foot bed. In the fx4 you can get the 6.5 bed and even the 4.10 gears like the raptor. No ecoboost in the raptor yet but they say it may be coming. That's what they run in the racing raptors and they beat all the V8 trucks!

Toyota quality was there in the 90's, but it isn't anymore.

My 1994 Camry still runs strong after 250,000 miles.

At last check the raptor currently only gets the 400+ hp 6.2.. You saying they might put the eco boost in for the raptor as a option? The 2011 dakar race stock class (I think it was that class) won by a american team with a 2010 5.4 Raptor.

Rumours have been flying around on a Jeep pickup for quite a few years now.. Recent speculation is 2014 when the wrangler is redesigned

Yeah, you'll be having tons of fun until you bend the frame first trip out.

I loved my Tacoma. It did very well off road, in spite of the IFS.
And it got much better mileage than my TJ.

But it's not a Jeep. I love my TJ

Alot of toyotas are made in america. As are as many of the parts as chrys, ford, etc. And we had a toyota celica for a while, and man that thing ran. No real issues either. But sadly the age of the supra, mr2, celica, and more is over.

tacoma pre ifs would be my second choice if they never made any wranglers after the cj stopped. to answer your question. a jeep is better off road and a tacoma is better on road. a wrangler is an off road vehicle that has been fitted with some on road stuff. the tacoma, and in fact all pickups except maybe the raptor, are on road trucks that can make it a ways off road but not as good as a vehicle designed for off road can.

i think it would also be cheaper to modify a tacoma.

still i would pick a jeep. because who is trailering or carrying a street bike around anyway?

I've got a 95 Tacoma that I bought new. I traded an 84 toyota 4x4 in on it. I also own a wrangler. The tacoma I own was built in Freemont California and has been as reliable as it gets. The wrangler is also jam up in reliability. My opinion? For his purposes the truck would be better suited
