TJ knocking, clicking noise from back of jeep

2003 TJ Sahara, 29500mi

Hi I am hearing a knocking, grinding noise from the back of my TJ. It was so bad that i thought I had a flat tire and pulled over. The dealer that i got it at says there isnt anything wrong even after i brought it back twice with the issue. It seems to happen after driving it for a while.

I also feel a slight hesitation when going into 2nd and 3rd and hitting the gas. Maybe a separate issue not sure.

I think it's the back drivers side but I'm not totally sure. Jeeps at another mechanic and so far I don't think they know what the problem is either.

try putting the camera on the ground in the middle of the jeep and slowly drive over it, might help in finding out if it is both sides or 1

Have you tried checking your rear drums. My sister had a ZJ that when the rear drum hardware broke apart it made that exact noise. Just a thought

Thanks for the replies.

My mechanic was able to reproduce the noises and found that it was something with the emergency breaking system. They are going to replace that as well as the rear breaks and pads.

Got the jeep back after they replaced the emegency break shoes, and rear pads and rotors. At first it sounded fine but the noise came back.

I'm going to wait until it gets worse and maybe take an under car video as it's happening as scgeek12 mentioned.

Maybe my cousins who are mechanics can take the rear diff plate off and see if it's that. It looks like it might have been opened before I got it because there is silver caulk around the rear diff plate (a little sloppy too) and it doesn't look normal.

2dmud i assume they checked the drums during the 3 visits to the mechanic but not exactly sure. Ill mention that too next time I go back.

Anytime, this also happened to me and it started out every now and then and then became constant you will prob. notice it more if you very slowly back into a turn.

Check the spider gears and teeth in your differential I'm getting similar problems and my spider gears are shot

My cousin thinks it's the posi. What might have happened was there was a leak in the rear dif at some point (which would account for the rtv on the rear diff) and maybe they put the wrong fluid in since it requires special friction modifier fluid. That plus they might have driven it for a while without sufficient fluid. Plus the popping seems to be worse after driving it for a while so maybe it is the wrong fluid in there.

That could possibly have screwed up the spider gears or other components in the rear diff.

Will find out Monday when I take it in.

There is some kind of additive that there supposed to put in there when they change the fluid.

My mechanic opened up the rear diff and not only wasn't there a gasket but the oil was regular motor oil. The gears inside look good though so they don't think that's the problem.

They took off the wheel bearings and noticed the round ring that the bearings roll on on both back sides were loose (assuming that the rings should not be loose). They ordered replacment rings from the dealer and those were loose too (after you hammer them in you can spin them around with your finger). They are going to reorder with the VIN of the vehicle to double check they got the proper ring but if it's still the wrong size then the previous owner must have replaced the rear. Carfax and dealer of course said it had no history of issues.

I'll post back when I have the verdict.

Ok, after they get the wheel bearing situation fixed be sure to keep an eye out and make sure that it does'nt start leaking, i just got mine back from the shop today and it was leaking even though it had just been replaced about a month ago. If the gear oil gets to low it could kill your rear axle then you would be looking at alot of $. And on the additive deal with the gear oil, some gear oil already comes with it, just look on the back of the gear oil bottle.

Mechanic is replacing the rear differential housing and bearings. Should get it back by wednesday. Luckily i got an extended powertrain warranty.

Hopefully you didn't have to pay for any of that brake work, since it didn't correct the problem. And maybe it's me, but one look at that diff cover would be a big warning flag.

And multiple trips to a shop, with multiple attempts at a fix is what we in the industry call "shot gunning". Throwing parts at a problem in hopes it fixes it.

It's a sign whomever is working on it, doesn't know proper diagnosis.
