TJ Nightmare

I'm not sure what I did in a past life to deserve this but here it all is. I bought this jeep back in December, I knew it had some problems but they just keep coming. First problem, the jackass PO put 4 inch shocks on it and called it lifted, everything else was stock I had to replace both tracbars with JKS ajustables, steering stabalizer, his shitty shocks, and all the control arms, (Replacing springs later it drives like a bobble head)that sucked. Second, the top and doors, it has a 2 part hard top and half doors that have hard top sliders. The front of the top is broken on the drivers side, the area where the pin falls to connect the two peices has rotted out, and the upper half of the doors were only being held in with one screw each. To fix these problems I used my drimal to core out the top and put in a concreate anchor I cored out to make a new hole for the pin I JB welded it into place it worked from december till yesterday it fell out, need new plan thinking out trying a fiberglass repair kit. the doors I hate with a passion, I bought the door pins to attach the doors properly, they broke and did not hold the upper half of the doors on properly, door pins are sheit. I used furnature wheel peices screwed them into the door frames and drove rather large lag bolts throu the doors, this worked for a while but they keep breaking gona try my hand at welding next. Third problem, after a week the headlights stoped working I tried replacing the switch, no fix. Then took it to a friend he told me the PO wired a alarm system into the head lights alond with several other stupid things like wiring the radio wrong and a radar detector (useless cops don't belive jeeps can speed) had to rebuild harness $$$$$ SHEIT. Fourth repair this is the big one, the jeep had problems starting in cold weather took it to same friend he told me eventually the starter harness would need to be replaced ( Ill do this later) and that the valve stims were leaking oil and maybe the rings as well (SHEIT) new engine. $$$$$$$$$$$$ I replaced the water pump, timing chain, ignition coil, pistons, rockers, springs, push rods, and every other moving part in the damn engine along with having the engine pressure treated and cleaned they did everything short of check it for VD. Yay engine runs good now starts good skips a little on the start sometimes because I havent rebuilt that starter harness yet but all was good till earier this week noticed a oil leak, i'm not even gona look i'll just take it back to the mechanic let him deal with it. Today all gauges are good but the check engine light came on while driving to work, God hates me. Oww yea my AC compressor went out right befor summer as well.

Damn! You need a hug brother, and to sell that Jeep. Its got some bad ju-ju on it or something. Ive made the mistake on buying a vehicle when i knew I shouldnt have. I would say get it running and take a hit. You might lose out on some cash as you no doubt have more in it than you'll ever get for it, but cut your losses cause that pit is only gonna get deeper. I speak from experience, every repair makes you think, okay now it should be good, then, bam! Something else. I assure you God doesnt hate you, probably having a chuckle @ your expense, but doesnt hate you. Lol Good luck brother

Sorry to hear all the bad news. Not to dump on you but that is why when buying a used vehicle you check it all out. Sounds like quite a few of these items should have triggered the "Don't buy this POS" alarm before tossing your money at it.

Hope all the engine trouble is not a dire as it sounds, that would get really expensive...

Dude, you need to sell that turd pronto. Take the loss and move on. Sounds like the PO beat that Jeep like a rental and it will continue to be a money pit.

There were several flags I ignored when buying this Demonic Monster, I made a bad judgement call. the price was lowered for allot of the problems but the engine problem killed me 3000 bucks but its brand new now. waiting on the transmission to go out next.

But I didn't put a 4 inch lift on it before.
Maybe that guy sold it...

Its Satan in there breaking things not God. God heals, Satan detroys lol.

yeah, we take 'em with a grain of salt so to speak. Sometimes they need some TLC to get through but look on the bright side, once your done with this you will have an understanding of every system in a jeep. I know after a few yrs with mine I do lol.

Just curious how did your friend know the valve stems and maybe the rings were leaking oil??? Did he do a compression test?? Was the jeep burning oil?? Blue smoke out the tailpipe??? Did you bore the engine out!! Or just re-hone it??? Also how many miles?? Just curious because these engines are pretty much bullet proof... I have about 132k and I burn about a qt of oils between oil changes3-4k and that's nowhere near excessive... Just very curious as to what led to the rebuild...

As for the doors I think someone on here might be selling used full doors if not check Craigslist or eBay, you usuall can find a good deal...

Best of luck with everything else....

It was burning a quart a week right befor the rebuild no smoke thou. Also the PO put a new radiator on it and got a head job so it has a history of over heating. When we pulled the head you could move the back piston with your hand the ring was almost compleately gone and the valve stem bushings were badly weather cracked. The main clue was the starting problem it had to burn off the oil that had leaked into the chamber befor it could start. At least thats what I was told.

Ok just checking....I feel sorry for you... That's a tough break!! I wish you the best of luck with everything you have done to it..... At least this way you know that you now have a reliable jeep that's should last a very long time.... Good luck and get some pics posted.....

It is easy to say this from the comfort of my couch.....but IMO based on my TJ unless yours has serious body or frame cancer...would keep going...it seems to me you are about half way to a totally rebuilt/ restored Jeep!!

Once you repair and fix the neglect you SHOULD have a very good JEEP.

Im gona keep going the only big things left are the transmission and axles, and the axles are fine. The transmission is OK right now but we will see how it handles the new engine ill be happy if I get 2 more years out of it.

Today rebuilt the starter harness, O2 harness, and replaced all 4 U joints. Hopefully that should fix the loss of power issues and the horrible shaking.

Dude, I learned the hard way that you gotta fight through this kinda crap and stick with it. It sucks I know. I am an ABSOLUTE perfection NUT (just ask my fiancee ) about maintenance and every single little thing working perfectly on my vehicles. I couldn't tell you the number of times I have had similar experiences and dumped loads of time, effort, and money into a project and then finally just said screw it and sold it for next to nothing. Oddly enough I run into 2 people that bought project vehicles from me that I reached that point on and they still have the vehicles they bought from me and have never had a SINGLE DAMNED ISSUE!!!!!

Basically I kept fixing and working on both of them until they were perfect but then a couple things would go wrong and I'd be like "as soon as this one thing is fixed I'm dumping this POS!!!!" My old 91 Jeep YJ is flying around my town still, which actually both pleases me AND PISSES ME OFF!!! That thing was a nightmare for me, yet the guy who has it now is like "yeah man I've had this thing for 10 years now and only had to buy one battery for it..and..hell the tires you put on it even lasted 6 years"

Yea all I got left to do to get it running great is fix a rear main seal which the mechanic who put the new engine in is doing for free. I also put in a new high end ignition coil. I really don't know what else can go wrong but if it can it will.

We're in the same boat here. I still got to buy most of those things, plus a cv driveshaft. It sucks to know the previous owner had to be negligent and put the poor jeep through this.

Stick with it bro, you'll get 'er. If it's one thing in life I've learned when working on stuff, it's gonna really make you mad and what not, if that happens, take a break, grab a cold beer, smoke a ciggy, do whatever it takes to get your mind off it for awhile. Then get back at it. If I had a nickel for everytime I've said I'm done with this POS and whatnot.....well, I've still got a 94YJ and 04TJ that I love to death and run great! Sometimes getting to that point is the hard part. You'll get it running perfect again and look back and think, crap, that sucked, but I learned a lot and know what to look out for in the future. Consider it a learning experience and a good excuse to have a couple of beers! Good Luck, sounds like things are already looking up for you!
