Tj overcharging problem

So I went out to my jeep had to get it jumped. charged normal. Got on interstate and saw my gauge was maxed out. got to where i was going turned jeep off, and had to get it jumped again. same thing drove it a mile or two then gauged maxed out again. when I got home I let it idle to see what it would do. the gauge went back to normal. I let it sit for about ten min before cutting it off. and it wont start. what should i look for first?
