TJ Owners in the UK

Want to buy a 4x4 for driving off road at pay and play sites plus some greenlaning and general fun, am a big fan of the Wrangler, read a 4x4 magazine that says it's not that capable off road compared to some modern technology vehicles but surely with some mud tyres and a suspension lift it will beat 99%.

Are there any UK owners here who have modified their TJ Wrangler and done some serious off roading, how did you find it. Also who did you use for the mods and what did you do in terms of suspenion, arb lockers etc.

I'm Not in the UK here but the wrangler is pretty good out of the box here in the states, I saw the new 2007 wrangler and am not to impressed with the new body design and havent really looked to close at what the setup underneath is. TJ or YJ are both good, the CJ in the later years of AMC had weak frames under them, I know I made one look like a pretzel.

One favorite past time of jeepers is to modify there jeep to suit there individual needs. They are very versitile and alot of stuff is out there for mods.

yeah here in the states the wrangler is probably known as the most capable stock 4x4 out of the box...and it can take a serious beating...you will be surprised at what it can do stock! and when heavily modified, hardly anything can stop it!...if your gonna mod it heavily for four wheelin' then go with some big tires and a long arm along with some beefy axles and maybe a detroit or aussie locker...and maybe while your at it throw a
V8 in there! jk

Just curious , what were they comparing the TJ to ? What modern Tech vehicles ? I know on paper at least some rigs with center diffs look pretty impressive , but like newer Land Cruisers they get too heavy , not great in the real world . I'm pretty new to Jeeps so i could be wrong .
Cheers .................................. 409.

In my opinion, there are several 4x4's in competion with the jeep, Land cruiser, Hummer, Land rover to name a few. I prefer Jeep because it is the origional and has a long history of making offroad vehicles. Jeep has for the most part cared about what it customers wanted in a 4x4. Light, manuverable, easy to work on, easy to modify, and very universal. Yes Wranglers aren't the fanciest on the market but as far as the capabilities the are the best, my opinion only. If you want a vehicle that will be basically your pal in a sticky situation. The jeep is it. The functionality of the wrangler is the best part of it. If I want to get through a mud pit, it can do it, If I want to take a trail to my hunting cabin, it will work, and if I want to go through a pass that is blocked by a rock slide, it will do it. They are not indestructable but pretty dang close. My opinion is pretty slanted toward jeep as you see.
