I have a 1998 TJ, 4.0, automatic; recently I had an issue with it running hot. The water pump was bad and so was the fan clutch. I replaced the pump and clutch along with flushing the radiator. For the most part that fixed my problem. Driving down the road it does great but if turn on my a/c it runs the temp gauge up. I have since replaced the thermostat and temp sensor with no improvement noted. Is there anything else can try before replacing the radiator? I did burp the system after refilling with antifreeze.
If the radiator isn't boiling over from underneath the radiator cap, I doubt it needs a new radiator cap. But if you decide to replace it, make sure to get an 18 lb. model.
You flushed the radiator but did you check it with a flashlight inside underneath the radiator cap to see if it is clogged up any with hard water/mineral deposits? Has it tap water ever been added to the radiator when mixing up the coolant? Tap water can cause the radiator to clog up with disolved minerals, only distilled water should ever be added to a radiator (or the battery).
I've got a problem right now with my 04 TJ that when my A/C is on I have cold air blowing out vents. But the Condenser is extremely hot. It's so hot it causes my engine temperature to go up 20 degrees driving and overheat when sitting in place for a while. I've even put an electric fan on the Jeep to try to fix the problem it helps a lot but not enough to take care of Condenser problems. I'ld check that too.
I did repalce the cap, I forgot to mention it on the list.
I did look in there with a flashlight but could not tell much as far as it being clogged....It does have an orange-rust tint to the inside of the radiator as seen with iron ore water. I havent' had the jeep long so I dunno what the previous owner put in it but I put distilled in it this last time I changed it.
Did you flush the entire system with a good chemical flush? I use Blue Devil and run it for a total of 6-8 hours before emptying out all of the crud. Helped mine out a lot.
Which Antifreeze do you use? I saw something about G05 being the one to use. But there were problems with it. But when you look up on any parts store they say to use conventional antifreeze.
