Tj soft with tinted windows... What years??

So yesterday I was cruising CL and came across a black soft top for 200. I called and requested pics and got some info. Well here it was an OEM that was not used. The PO used only the hardtop The best part it included all OEM hardware. So I went to get it. Well ends up i get it for 140!! I figure I can get that out if the hardware and have free top. To my question.

It is supposed to be OEM off of a 98. I can not see any aftermarket tags/ markings. It has tinted windows. When were tinted windows available OEM?

Thanks!

like you i got mine(new-in box oem sunrider w/frame/surrounds/etc) off of CL for $350. it has tinted windows and fit right on(sorta-had no idea what i was doing)
not sure exactly what yr it was ordered for, but the PO ordered it then totaled his jeep befor it arrived. was for hard doors and not really all that many around here-took him 2 weeks to cut asking price 1/2. don't feel bad, he got my $$ plus more from insurance than he paid for the jeep-to me it was a win/win.
Not sure but i think the tops are for the model, not necessarly the yr. do know the type of doors makes a dif on which one you get. If it were me, i'd put on the complete new one and sell the old hardware-either way you made out like a bandit.

The reason I am trying to find when tinted windows were available OEM is i know at some point sailcloth became OEM as well. This top seems heavier- like it maybe sailcloth as well??

4 ply sailcloth was 01-02
3 ply sailcloth was 03-06

Thanks Neil.

Now were tinted window available on a TJ models or did that start a certain year?

Would there be any date code on the door surrounds or anything??

The guy I bought it from knew nothing. He said it was off of a 98 but I have my doubts. Try to find out what I bought.

Yes tinted windows were available from the factory. I have not been around the Jeep world to know if they have been available from 97.

All factory soft tops fit all door types. They all require door surrounds.

251.... Go to morris 4x4 or Qtec and see if they offer replacement tinted windows for a 98..... That'll at least tell you if they were an option. The zippers changed in 03, so earlier windows won't fit a later top, and vice versa.

They do sell tinted replacement windows but that does not mean it was an option in 98 (I don't know if it was or was not).

I am getting a little lost in what the OP is trying to determine. You are trying to figure out what year the top is really from, correct?

There are several differences:

- The above mentioned thickness

- 97-02 denim was the pattern

- 03-06 diamond was the pattern
(note, some 01-02 were diamond. I have one of those)

- 03-06 Driver's side window: male zipper is now on window, female zipper on the top, previous years (97-02) were vice-versa.

Yes I am trying to determine what year it is truly from.
I Appreciate all of the responses.
I know things are available aftermarket but it seems like the top is noticeably thicker than a standard top.
It has been a while since I had a sailcloth top but I wonder if I may have lucked out and got a factory sailcloth.

If it's a factory top the windows will have Chrysler emblems and there should be some tags on it here and there. Mine has a tag on the inside of the sail panel. It's my understanding that sail cloth has a distinctive pattern to it. Can you post a close up pic of the fabric, maybe then Geoff or someone can help identify it...

Here is a close up. I was able to find a label in the lower left of the rear window. It is very hard to read but says.

Solvay draka Inc
Do not rub dry
Wash with water soaked cloth

Don't see a manufacturer.

That is the diamond pattern so it was used (03-06 (or per my note an 01 -02))or replacement top if it was with a 98 TJ. Which window is the female slider on?

Well that helps. The windows have the male end. The female end (pulls) are on the top. So does that mean 03-06? I see no mopar/ chrysler markings - does that mean aftermarket ? There are no tags at all.

The male/female are opposite drivers/passanger. Which side has the female slider attached to the window?

They are not opposite on mine. The top has all of the pulls. The rear has two pulls. The side have one pull each and it is attached to the top.

Well if you have all of the sliders attached to the top for the side windows (one is not attached to a window), it is not a factory top.
