Tj sound system overhaul (Whats your dream setup?)
Long time reader, with my first post!
Ive searched the forums, but have not found answers to my specific questions yet... (If someones already answered my questions I'm sorry )
I'm not a major audiophile, but definitely want a better sound setup than the stock which is currently in my '02 TJ.
Sorry if this next section is long-winded, but explains where I'm at and what I've tried.. (semi-skip-able)
This is my third TJ. Within a week or so of buying my first TJ (an '02 se with a safari top) I replaced the stock speakers. I got some 4x6 brackets and put in a basic component set (polk DXi460p) in the dash, 5.25 coaxials (polk DXi525) in the sound bar and didnt have rear seats, so I put two 12s in a sealed box in the back on a 4 channel amp. It was ok. Later I put in a new head unit and moved the 5.25s to the dash, and put a 6.5 component set in the soundbar. It was better, but still just ok.. Then I upgraded the subs to 2 15" kicker L7's (sealed box.) It was good, not the greatest, but I was content. Then I sold that Jeep and bought a '98 automatic se with backseats and a hardtop. I quickly regretted it, but I did keep the 4 channel amp and the 15's. As I wasn't as attached to this Wrangler I didn't invest much in its sound, just put some coaxial 6.5s in the soundbar (pioneer TS-G1644R and they installed without needing to drill holes..) I now have the Jeep I want to keep, but the stock sound needs to go. This Jeep has rear seats (which Id prefer to keep) a hardtop, and an instatrunk (which Id also prefer to keep clear and available)
My plan and questions-
I would like to use the stock locations and squeeze as much out as possible before moving to the next step.
My Amplifier- kenwood 4 channel 90 watts rms per channel @ 2 ohm (180 max)
Dash- 5 1/4 (polk db5251) or try to shove a 6 1/2 inch component set? Should I put tweeters on dash firing at windshield? And would baffles behind help?
Soundbar- Could I shove shallow mount 6.5" subs in the sound bar with a ton of poly fill and use a low-pass filter? Kicker CompVTs minimum sealed box recommendation is .2 cubic feet per sub. Would the 2 7/8 mounting depth interfere? And could/ would the hole around the interior light need to be patched/light relocated? Would sound pods work better or it be insanely difficult to build my own sound bar?
Console- I have an empty center console and would prefer to keep it that way for now.
Subwoofers- I own a 10" passive bazooka tube, and two 15" kicker L7s in a box that wont fit in the rear with the seat brackets in place. If opt for subs, id like to use them in a custom built box that drops in if the seats are removed while keeping the instatrunk, but would prefer to keep the seats. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the subs in the rear seat, but any ideas for other stealth locations such as by wheel well or foot well crammed in dash?
So, I'm handing it to you guys. What would your dream stock/hidden location TJ sound setup be?
What should I do?
Thanks for any help, and I hope this helps others in the future. (I will post pictures with the things that work, and difficulty along the audio path I choose)
