I have a 2000 TJ. The fender flares are stock but are starting to really fad. The black on the rest of the Jeep (hard top, mirrors, steps) are fine. Only the fender flares are grayish now. Is there anything I can put on them besides repainting them? Maybe something I can wipe that will darken them up. Thanks
Forever Black and all of those products work, somewhat but only for a short amount of time, and don't hold up to any type of dust, mud or rain. I gave mine the Krylon touch.
Use a heat gun (no, not a hair dryer) on them. That will melt the gray surface oxidation and turn them black again until the sun does it again to them 6 months later. It's amazing, it's like the heat gun was spraying out shiny black paint on them. No need to mask off the paint if you don't hold the high heat on the paint for an excessive amount of time that would be unreasonable once you see how quickly the process goes.
Black flares became faded gray. We tried the Back to Black, 303, and other various and assorted things with no luck. I wiped them down with alcohol (rubbing, not drinking ) taped them off and used the Krylon Fusion Satin Black spray paint. It is tricky to use, it needs to go on in mutiple thin coats, results look good and have held up to the PA winter and road salt so far.
My tj is in the body shop after hitting a guard rail when some jerk could not control his car and almost slammed into me. They will be replacing the rf flare and most likely look like crap since they were evenly faded, is there an easy way to fade the new flare? I like the worn out look, it matches my age.
I sprayed some tire glaze (black magic-esque type stuff) on mine the other day and got great results.
Back to looking new but of course it's only been a couple of days.
when i used to use the shiney black magic stuff, when i would drive again, everything would stick to them. and then it eventually fades again. I had this jeep linexed and my previous jeep linexed for many years and never faded, in bama that is.
Just got done doing the heat gun trick. It's 38* outside ffs. They look good. Couple of suggestions before doing this.
1. Clean any protectants ( back to Black etc. ) you have put on there before. ( most have some sort of wax in them).
2. Do it on a warm day for crying out loud.
3. Start on one end and work your way to the other from tub to bottom of flare.
It was cold and windy when I did mine so they cooled off faster than I would have thought they should. Which made it hard to keep them heated.
