Unhappy tj tailgate vent?

so to make a long story short, i backed into a telephone pole and need a new tailgate and tire mount. i found a used one in my color with the tire mount for $150, but its from a 2000 tj without the vent. i know some people have issues without running the vent, but the only complaints i seem to find out it are running a hardtop. will i have any issues with the hard closing doors or hvac whistling if i am running a soft top? i beleive the soft tops were different in 2000 from 2006 but i dont think they had a vent in them? lol only the hard tops right?if i am still going to have a problem running the soft top, are there any solutions to it? i am thinking if i have to i can fab up a vent in the tailgate and cut some louvers in the inside also. i cant pull a plug out of the floor because i still have carpet. im pretty good on the fab work so if i am going to run into problems with the softtop and no tailgate vent, how did you go about fixing this? besides getting a new tailgate.

No. You won't have problems with either top, other than that the doors might require a bit more force to close if you ever run a hard top.

She's right. I cannot imagine concerning myself with " lack of vent ".. especially since you stole it for 140 bucks.. I can imagine some LSD crazed engineer on the Wrangler team insisting upon the necessity of that really stupid vent ..

half way through 02 they started adding the vents into the tailgate and removing them from the hardtop, so they have had some type of vent even back into the yj era.

The soft top is not sealed at all. Look at all the gaps.

The vent is only there to ease in closing the doors with a hard top....... Nothing to do with HVAC. Most YJ's don't even have A/C, and many TJ's don't.....

Well I have read posts where some have indicated their HVAC is not as efficient or there is a whistling noise. (I don't totally buy it)

This thread is still going on,,, who woulda thought it,, all about a useless vent on the tailgate.. I think we should petition the aftermarket community to make a kit, complete with cutting patterns, templates,, doors and hardware, so we can install vents where they really need to be, right down by your feet, through the sides of the front quarter panels. Kickem open, flickem shut.. I'm hoping for such a kit, then we'd have useful vents where we need them to be ,,, Jeep On !!

I have a 2005 with an older non vented tail gate and factory soft top no problem with air or heat. I just bought a hard top (06 non vented) and had to vent the tail gate so the doors closed easier and the air blew harder, You can hear the blower not blowing as hard till you crack a window before I vented the tailgate.

OK... I am looking at this thread while searching for tailgate info so I can mount a trail rack to my '06. And I do not want to drill holes through anything to do with the vent.

My hardtop seals very tight. With no vent, how would fresh air coming through the climate control vent circulate. It would be like trying to blow air through a bottle. The climate control would still work in recirculate, but not very well when using outside air.

And the windows up, last door to be closed is really hard to close, even with a vented tailgate. But no problems when using the ragtop!
