Never had the CJ8 Scrambler, but when the LJ came out, I knew I had to have one. This is it. the last Jeep I'll ever need. perfect combination for on-off road. I recently got rid of my Z71 stepside and bought a small trailer to make up for the loss of the bed. JK unlimited? Forget it. Nice, but not the same at all. Gotta say, with the hardtop and no lift, they look a little funky, but with a little lift and a soft top (or no top), they look just right. I also prefer red or yellow, but the price was right for this one and IMHO with the LJ, black makes the proportions look better

I have had mine for one year.., its a virtual Rubi now, adding lockers, gears and such.. my wife and I really enjoy it and offroading. We now have something we really like doing together outside. Plus the extra space is a huge, huge plus.

Yeah, I think you are. The regular 05-06' LJ unlimited's are the hands down best jeeps ever made. All the cr@p on the Rubi models I would end up selling off and replacing......so why pay extra for it to begin with?

Well.......in a lot of ways.....they are built with a lot of cheap parts, like pretty much all economy cars. Id have a really hard time owning a stock one now, knowing how much they can be improved upon.

I'm liking my LJ. Only had it 1 week and I'm already checking on ways to mod it. Not that it needs it, only 'cause I want to.

Rubi's make a lot of sense for different people with different needs. So not crapping on them. Just for those who are really going to build them up I feel the standard unlimited is a better base to work off of in a lot of ways for a lot of different reasons.

The only thing that is better about the LJ vs the LJ rubicon is the price, IMO. I understand your thought process though. It's like building a race car. If the whole drivetrain is being replaced anyways then it makes more sense to buy the base model vs. the more expensive model. But that doesn't make the unlimited better but it does make it just as good. I prefer the rubicon mostly because it's a daily driver that I don't plan on going overboard with but I still want to have some fun. And if I ever did decide to build a gnarly rock rig it would be easier to sell the rubicon stuff to recoup some money vs. none rubicon stuff. It's just my opinion though and I love all LJs, rubicon or not.

Oh and I found this note on my jeep a few days ago. I thought it was pretty cool although I wouldn't want to sell it.

Wow...is that Rubi snobbery? I bought a non-rubi LJ for DD and dunes...the 4.1 transfer is not ideal for sand. Didn't realize with air, cruise, temp mirror and 4 wheel discs I was duped into a base model.
I'm so ashamed :'( .
Maybe I should trade up to a power wheels.

I'm currently in the market for an LJ, preferably a rubicon (as I have perfectly good reason to find that a smart move for me), and I may have found "the one". I've looked at somewhere around 15 and I've driven 6 or 7. I passed on one that would have been just fine due to the price, and I missed a really nice one owner with 34k miles by a day.

The one I'm working out details on now is super clean, really low miles, and has some upgrades that I would actually consider upgrades. Very few items are on it that will have to go to a new home. The price is high, I'm not crazy about the color, and it's a 6 speed but it meets 98% of my criteria.

Anyhow, I've seen trashed and overpriced rubi and standard, I've seen stockers with high miles and ones that didn't get much mechanical love and they're all within 4k of each other. Weird how someone thinks a stock LJ with 90,000 miles is worth the same as a pristine <40k mile LJ rubi with a Warn winch, good suspension, or a host of other quality parts I keep seeing on them near the same price.
