TJ's kick A$$ in the Snow!.. a few pics inside

Hi guys,

So the north east got hammered with snow, and my area got about 16 inches total. I was out all day yesterday playing around and at first I was a little nervous but the Jeep did great. I am running a set of 31" BFG A/T's and I've heard that they aren't the best in the snow and I only have a 2" lift so nothing crazy. I was thinking that I would eventually get stuck but the Jeep never even slowed down. At one point I was in a field with untouched snow that was above the top of the axles and the Jeep had no problem getting through it. I have a D44 rear with the factory trac-lock and it did really well with traction even though the Jeep would get a little skiddish as times. Here are a few pics from my driveway.

I know that some people say that Jeeps (and A/T's) aren't the best for the snow but I was really impressed. I will try to post a few more pics later of the Jeep in the really deep stuff.

Man, I wish we had some snow. Thanks for the pics. Jeeps are awesome in snow as long as the pilot's got some common sense. Nice dogs too.

JP Magazine did a big tire rating article and they said that the A/T's wern't good for snow since they clog up easily. I did notice that the tread would get clogged a bit but overall I was really happy. I mean, I went out with the idea of "let's see how stuck I can get" and I couldn't do it. I love my Jeep!

I've had great luck running A/T's in the snow, although I've heard M/T's are better in deep loose snow because they are more narrow.

Edit: Airing down helps too.

Wow, great pictures! I have the exact same set of tires on my 01' TJ and I think they're awesome in the snow. I was driving around through 12-14 inches of untouched snow and never had an issue. Lots of fun!

i first ran bfg a/ts than timberland a/ts when my jeep was stock.. both were 31x10.5s and my jeep always did GREAT in snow...

33x12.5 m/ts are a lil different especially it lifted.. but i didnt have any trouble yet this winter and i havent used 4wd yet either

whoever said the BFG AT isn't good in the snow is on Dope!! I have extensive ice/snow/mountain experience with the AT and they are still amongst some of the best snow tires I have found.. They are horrible in the mud though..

yah thats what i did.. went from 31'' bfg a/ts to 33'' procomp m/ts.. the mts are wider too which makes it a lil more noticable

Sorry in advance for possibly asking a dumb question. I need to put in my sig that I dont have a Jeep, know nothing about them and just about everything I post on this site is for my sis-in law. LOL! The tires in the OP, are they stock? The reason I ask in cuz she just texted me asking me to price her some "chunky" tires, all seasons. Yours look "chunky" enough, lol and they handle well in the snow which is always a plus even though this is a rare accumulation for the DC area.

The tires in my original post are 31 inch BF Goodrich All terrains. They are definitely "chunkier" than stock and an inch taller too. The specific size is 31x10.5x15. If your sis-in law is looking for some good tires I would recommend the BFG All Terrains. They feel good on the street, not noisy, and do well in the snow haha. The price isn't too bad either compared to other all terrains but they are more expensive than more "street friendly" light truck tires.

^Thanks, I showed her pics of the tires(not on a Jeep though) and she's asking for even "chunkier". LOL! After about 5 minutes of me bombarding her with questions it seems as though she's looking for something with really aggressive looking tread. I told her the only tires like that to my knowledge are true off road tires that are only used off road. Can someone let me know if I'm correct. This is a hard and unusual thing to search for.

How about something like this

Here they are on my TJ

They are retreads from TreadWright.com They are quite noisy on the road, but otherwise are a very good tire. I hope this helps you out.

That looks like a lot of fun. I hope we get some substantial snow around here.

I BURIED my Jeep yesterday on a dirt lane with snowdrifts to my FRONT BUMPER!!! I was pushing snow with my winch!! Needless to say, I got stuck. I was WAY out in the middle of the country, not a house in sight. I had to DIG OUT the Jeep. And I mean DIG OUT. I had to dig all the snow from around it as well as all of the packed snow underneath that was up snug against my friggin' FLOORBOARDS. That was a good time. I'm running 4.25" of suspension lift and another inch of body lift and I still had snow up to my floor. I made it to within 100' or so of a dry area in the road, so I made a path about 20' behind the Jeep and once I got it unburied, I backed it up and made a BALLS TO THE WALL dash and made it. There was NOTHING to string my winch to, so it was useless. Had a blast though!! It was about a 3-hour self-rescue, but it was a good time!! Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pics. I had my phone in the Jeep and it never occured to me to take a pic. It would have been a good one too!!

Oh yeah, and these are the tires I'm running, so it wasn't a grip issue!!! Sorry, it's a summer pic, but it'll have to do. I don't think I have any winter pics yet. We got 14" 10 days ago, and another 3-4 are forecasted for today.
