Too much water?? Problems

After running the above mudhole 2x and another one once, the motor died on the spot. Took about 5-6 minutes and then started back up.

Took on too much water, having problems. Idle is searching for a home. Sometimes runs at 1100, sometimes goes down to 250+/-. When running at a constant speed, ie 40 mph, the motor just cuts out. Then after approx 1 second, will continue to run. At highway speeds, the check engine light comes on. Takes 5-6 starts after it sits, for check engine light to go off. Have taken distributor cap off, had a heater running under the motor all night. Used a blowdryer to try and remove moisture from top of distributor, unplugged all the plug and coil wires, sprayed wd-40 in all holes, tried all I can think of.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the air filter/air box?

First thing I did was to replace air filter. It was soaked.

Oil does not show any signs of contamination. No bubbles.....

Sounds like TPS You probably got water in it. I've heard that that is a common problem put on a new one and a little silicone and you should be Fine.

TPS,Throttle position sensor?

Is that located behind the throttle body?

IF so, should be an easy fix if that is the problem..

Thanks

Check your 02 sensors also, I had the downstream go out after sinking my 97. Deffinatly sounds like a few other sensors up top, maybe even an ignition short somewhere. Start checking idle/ignition related sensors w/ a multimeter.

Btw, not too deep of water, WAY too fast into water

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) yes sorry I work with a bunch of Mechanics and forget not evryone speaks ther Language, But that is usally a problem when you get water on the TPS aparantly there not sealed as well as some other manufactures, So if that turns ot to be the culpret just silicone all the water entry points.

%100 agree and also I will try to avoid deep water/mud holes.
Last time I went off roading I played too much in the mud, and I had a tons of engine troubles a whole week.

TPS was indeed toast. TPS to MAP voltage was the code. TPS voltage was stuck at WOT. Replaced, and now it runs like it wants to go again!

Next time, I'll go slower

Thanks for the help

O.k. Glad you got your problem fixed. Here is the secret for going through soupy mud/water holes. Its is to start out slow and increase your speed as you go. That way you are not creating such a large splash under your hood and are driving the wave created forward. It is also helpful to know how deep it is( con a buddy to go first). Only Time I go full throttle through mud holes is in competitions and I clean under the hood right afterwards and usually expect something might need replaced. Luckily I haven't had to replace anything yet.
