Torn between 2 winches...

Hey guys please help me decide between these 2 winches. The first one is the tuff stuff recon 10,500 with synthetic rope. I have read really good reviews on it for the money and the line speed is great. The jeep is 90% on road but I recently regeared, lifted, put on 33's and put truetracs front and rear. I want it to be capable off road just like my old yj was. I'm not looking to "break the bank" sort of speak because I don't wheel enough with this jeep to drop $1000 on a winch. I even have a warn on my quad but I only use that to raise and lower the plow. The other winch is the tuff stuff xtreme series 12,500 with synthetic rope. The guy was trying to talk me into the xtreme and said he'd give it to me for the same price as the recon since I just bought front and rear spyder bumpers, light bars etc. I just wanted to see what you guys thought was better since they will cost me the same amount. I will also be installing a light bar on top of the bumper so I don't know if I will have clearance issues with either winch. Thanks in advance.

Here are links to both of them

Recon 264100PPW 10,500lb Performance Winch | TruckandWinch.com

Tuff Stuff Xtreme 12,500lb Waterproof Winch | TruckandWinch.com

Also the 12,500 winch shown in that ad is priced with the cable on it. They will do the synthetic rope for me on the xtreme for the same price as the recon...

You can find a used Warn on CL for that price range

First, don't let the "waterproof" hype sway you... any of the winches commonly installed on Jeeps are fine with exposure to fresh water.

I'm no fan of imported winches but between those two, I'd go for the Recon 10.5K lb. winch and add a roller fairlead which is much easier on a winch cable. Not to mention even a 10.5k winch is overkill for a Wrangler. 8-9.5k is the most commonly recommended capacity for a winch. And the gearing is likely better on the 10.5K winch. More winching capacity with the same HP motor just means they geared it lower so the line speed would be even slower/worse on the 12.5K lb. winch.

And for those who say who cares about line speed... the more experience one has winching, the more important it becomes since not all winching is done with the Jeep stuck in just one position in need of just a short tug. Much of the time a winch can be used as an assist over a distance on a particularly tough trail where forward progress will be assisted by the driver of the Jeep. And if the winch doesn't have enough line speed during those times the driver can make forward progress, the winch line is likely to get snarled.

And where winches are concerned, the cheapest winch is seldom a good choice when the winch isn't just for bumper decoration.

But for that price, I'd rather buy a used Warn winch.

I bought a Recon 10.5 with synthetic line 3 years ago and have had to use it about a dozen times to pull me out of the snow. It has worked fine for what I've been using it for. It is mounted in a receiver because if the snow is really deep the plow will pop up the undercarriage gets hung up. So you have to pull yourself off. I also got the wireless remote with it which is worth it's weight in gold.

Thanks for the info about your recon. I just pulled the trigger on one. I really don't care where it's made as long as it works good. It seems to be half the price of everything else and I hear the customer service is great. If it'll serve me for 3 years it paid for itself.

you don't need a 10.5 or 12.5 winch for a jeep- an 8k will do just fine; no sense in spending extra money for a winch way larger than you're going to need. Jeeps weight 3400-3800 lbs...you don't need that much power.
