Question Towing A Trailer

Getting ready for the annual spring camping trip.
It happens to be my turn to drive.
We normally take my buddies (4 man) Pop Top Camping Trailer when we go.
I haven't towed anything with my Jeep yet,
and just wondering if it can handle the job okay.
We have to make a 2,000ft highway elevation climb to get to the spot that we normally go to, and I don't have a trani cooler.

Do you think my 4.0L Auto can handle the job without damaging anything?

Auto or manual trans? If it's an auto then be careful you don't overheat the trans and cook the fluid. Just take it slow and easy and change the fluid before you go if you have the time.

What is the weight of the trailer and gear? The max. towing capacity is 2000lbs.

in my opinion that will be fine, if you did it everyday it might be a worry, but a couple of times should be ok. I climb 1000ft EVERY day in a 3 mile strech (only 3 miles) to get to work, and have for 3 years. and I pull trailers a decent bit and haven't had any problems, I just upgraded to 4.10 gears becasue the 3.07's really sucked pulling the hills with 33's, but i'm good now

What size tires?

I towed a pop up in my TJ with 5 speed manual, 33" tires and 4.56 gears. Worked pretty good! Pretty steep up the mountain but I took it slow and worked just fine. Make sure your brakes are 100% as well.

Check the weight of trailer
Stopping is the problem not so much the tranny IMO

My TJ had an automatic and it towed my pop-up up the mountains just fine, though my Taos model pop-up is the smallest & lightest that Fleetwood makes. Larger pop-ups can easily weigh more than the 2,000 lb. max safe tow limit for the TJ so be wary. I would replace (completely flush) the ATF+3 that Jeep fills our automatics with with the later upgraded synthetic ATF+4 (like from Valvoline) which withstands the higher temps towing causes far better. That's what I did with my automatic & it felt pretty good when I started seeing the tranny temp gauge I installed climb up somewhat when climbing the pretty steep mountain grades I needed to to make it out to my local deserts.

Here's a pic of his trailer:

Name: matt's trailer.jpg
Views: 330
Size: 6.5 KB

I have 3.73 gears and am sitting on 33x12.50's.
I'm unsure of the weight of his trailer,
but imagine it does have some weight to it as it is an old 70's model.
If it weighs more than 2,000lbs,
I guess I'll just have to tell him that either one of the other guys needs to tow it, or we'll just have to use tents this year. ....
Hey...I'm not going to tear the hell out of my vehicle just for a camping trip.

My truck would do it without even breaking a sweat,
but I have a roll pan and no towing package.
Awe well.

Based on your configuration and the size of that pop-up, I think you made a good decision.
