Towing my TJ

My jeep was was stolen awhile back, came back missing an owners manual ontop of many other things.

I put a tow bar on the front. What is the proper way to tow? I just want to double check. 2000 sport with auto trans. Transfer case in "N" and transmission also?

The transmission must be in Park (to prevent it from turning without the proper lubrication being present) and transfer case in Neutral. Make sure the ignition switch is unlocked too so the front wheels are free to follow you as you make turns.

I think it's Transfer case in "N" and transmission in park with the automatic.

1. Start the engine
2. Put transmission in N
3. Put t-case in N
4. Put trans. in gear to verify t-case is in N
5. Turn off engine
6. Put trans. in PARK

putting the trans. in park with the engine running could damage the trans.

you'll also need to shift the trans. to N before starting engine to reverse the process.

also, you'll tow with the key in the off position, but not locked. that's one click forward from where you put the key in/take it out.

Ok. I finally going to tow my jeep with the tow bar. I pulled it around the neighborhood last night to make sure everything worked good before I hit the road.

One question. When I go to take the transfer case out of N is grinds real bad. It sounds horrible. Why is this? When ever I am putting it in or out of 4 low it never grinds like this. It only did it after I towed it in N. Should I put the transfer case in gear before I start engine?

Another note. My steering never locks, even with the key out. I pulled it with the key turned anyways just incase. Thought that was wierd.

Only towing it no more than 75 miles. I usually put in on a flatbed but this time on the way home I am pulling the travel trailer back and going to have someone drive the jeep back. I will take it slow and hope for the best.

That is probably a result of the theft!
