Question Towing question...

I have an '03 TJ, 6cyl., 5-speed. I know the "power" is marginal and braking will be totally on the Jeep. I just bought a 20' pontoon boat, no trailer brakes. Has anyone pulled a boat like this or even a smaller travel trailer and if so, how's the braking and have you had problems with wind?

So long as the combined weight of the boat, trailer, & everything inside is less than 2000 lbs. and you have a minimum of 10% of that total combined weight as tongue weight you'll be ok. Be certain it all weighs less than 2,000 lbs, that is the max safe tow weight for the TJ with the 4.0L.

I tow my jet ski all the time. its a larger style (08) 3 seater. It is only around 1000lbs though and I have never had an issue towing it.

Thanks Jerry, I appreciate the info...I guess I'll pass on using the Jeep, the gross weight of the boat, motor and trailer is approximately 2500lbs..and...even pulling it with a 4-Runner, the wind was very noticable.

Good decision. The TJ's short wheelbase makes it less than an ideal tow vehicle anyway.

Pulling a pantoon boat is like pulling a sailboat, a lot of wind resistance and moving the trailer arround anyway. Like Jerry says too short of a wheelbase.

Cool Towing the pontoon..

I had to move my pontoon to the storage lot so just for the heck of it I used the TJ. It reminded me of when I used to pull a two horse (with two horses)trailer with an old model Bronco...NOT a smart move. Even in town, the pontoon pushed the TJ around some...can imagine what a heavy wind on the interstate would be like...
Thanks for the advice...
