towing question

I have an 05 wrangler x, with no lift, only 31x10.50 on aftermarket wheels. when i pull my fourwheeler trailer at about 55 mphs the whole rearend of the jeep starts swaying. It will get bad enough that the tires on the jeep start barking. It doesn't do this when i pull the trailer with my 97 extended cab half-ton chevy. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Uh... the short wheelbase of the Jeep compared to the bus length wheelbase of the Ex-cab.
You sure you have enough tongue weight, as in the 4 wheeler not too far back on the trailer, but also not too far forward?
Do some test runs with it further up until you find the sweet spot to tie it down at.

Thanks i'll try that some more. I've tried pulled all the way forward, letting itroll all the way to the endgate, and both places backed on the trailer. Again thanks for the help, I thought there might have been something to do with the rearend of the jeep.

What size and weight is the trailer...same weight of the 4 wheeler?
Your Wrangler is only rated to safely tow 2000 lbs.

I tow small utility trailers with gear all the time. Tongue weight is key with the Wrangler. The short wheel base plays the biggest role in towing with a wrangler. Also make sure you have plenty of room to stop when pulling any trailer with a wrangler.

You could check that the rear swaybar is still on the Jeep. If it were removed, you'd get some nasty body sway on turns even without the trailer on.
Also, be sure the trailer tires are in good condition and have the correct pressure (as well as correct pressure in the Jeep tires) and that all the suspension parts of the trailer are in good shape as well as the wheel bearings.
I've towed a small dirtbike (3 rail) trailer many times on the Jeep. A couple times with a battery operated golf cart on it (which is a lot heavier than a quad), and never had any sway problems. Having a LWB Jeep helps, but I'm still guessing it's more trailer issues than Jeep.

I've seen on the highway that most trailers will do that if your going faster than you should be for the tires, weight, etc... if it sways at 55, you should stay at 50 IMO.

I watched it wipe out a toyo pulling two quads on a trailer over black ice. He was going fast enough to sway his trailer and it actually pulled him right around, he was backwards on I69 about 100 yards off the road by the woods.

I watched it wipe out a Chevy Blazer (Sm size) with a (too big) camper on the back when they were trying to stop to fast. They swayed back and forth a couple times, pulled the rear end right around and put them backwords into a ditch here on M24. They rolled twice, dust and debree flying everywhere. The camper was in about 1,000 pieces. We were the first on the scene and helped them out of the wreckage (on its side) as we were about 4 cars behind them when it happened. And of course, the other three cars in front of me just looked at them as they drove by. Its like, come on, I know they should'nt be pullin' that much weight but there are people in that truck WE NEED TO GET THEM OUT NOW! There were four people in the blazer and two dogs. All were ok, just scratched up and quite pissed off...
