How big of trailer w/ what weight? I imagine mostly highway driving and mostly flat terrain wouldn't be too taxing on your Jeep.

So long as the loaded trailer is 2000 lbs or under and you have 5-10% (no less than 5%!!) of the trailer's total weight sitting on the trailer hitch (tongue weight), you'll be fine. However, U-Haul won't rent trailers to Wranglers with a soft top so you'll probably have to find a different trailer rental company to rent from. If your TJ has a hardtop, no problem. Yes I know their policy is stupid but they won't back down from it.

Will the Jeep make it? Yes.

Will it put miles on the Jeep? Yes.

Will the Jeep get crappy MPG's? - Yes, so will a U-haul towing a Jeep.

If it's my money, I'm towing w/ the Jeep.

I towed a 5x10 trailer w/ clothes, small electronics, and a Harley Davidson Sportster from Canton OH to Cape Coral FL through the WV/NC mountains and I made it. Yeah, my calf was sore due to the lack of cruise and I'd never been passed by so many semi-trucks going uphill in my life. A couple years later I made the move back, this time w/ a U-haul truck and my wife's Jeep Liberty in tow... it was hell. Towing w/ the Jeep was a lot less nerve racking than driving the huge underpowered U-haul w/ the Liberty in tow.

Edit: BTW - when I towed from OH-FL, it was w/ a 97 Wrangler SE 4cyl 5spd. I again say you should be fine, just keep your heads up and plenty of following distance.

Their policy is they won't rent trailers for convertibles. Even though the TJ has a rollbar and the hard top is not structural or protective in a rollbar, their policy doesn't make an exception for a Wrangler. They don't care because Wrangler owners are not a huge market for them.

I don't think U-Haul will let you tow the 5'x8' behind the jeep. I could be wrong though.

Yeah I had the same argument with them as you possibly had, but still they said no. Something about no soft top SUVs and ford explorers, I thought that deal was with the tires and not the ford explorer. So as far as towing a trailer goes it sounds like I souldn't have any problems then. thanks for the help.

Borrow someone's SUV, rent the trailer, switch at home.

If he did that and had an accident, the insurance provided by U-Haul for their trailer wouldn't cover it.
