Towing with a TJ

How much weight can a TJ with a 4.0L and an OME 2.5" lift tow, if any?

i think its something like 2000lbs in stock form, but i dont really see the lift changing that to much. if you are running bigger tires with stock gearing it may be a little less

2000 lbs. is the factory tow limit for the 4.0L, lifting it doesn't really change it unless your tires are big enough and your gear ratio is so high (like 3.07) that your power is way down. I tow an 1800 lb. pop-up tent trailer without problem with my TJ with 5.5" of lift, 35" tires, and 4.88 gearing.

Sorry to change the subject but Axiom how do you like that 2.5" ome lift? I'm thinking about getting the same lift. What size tires are you running?

only 2000 lbs? here in europe we are allowed to tow 4850 lbs with a TJ (with a maximum speed of 50 miles and teh trailer must have an overrun brake).

don't y'all also get the diesel engines in 'em over there, cause that could be a big bit of that increased capacity

a diesel was never available in a TJ. the JK comes with a 2.8 CRD diesel engine. itīs way better than the V6.

wish they used the 2.8 crd more in the us, those things would run the 4.0 into the ground with all that torque

Don't act surprised Nicolas, you have mentioned that countless times whenever someone mentions Jeep's 2000 lb. tow capacity limit here in the U.S.. Germany doesn't have speed limits on the Autobahn either, apples and oranges.

The limit isn't so much the power either - it is more of a wheel base concern. Larger trailers will start to toss the SWB around when you brake, turn corners etc. Of course things like overrun brakes and such will help but the SWB is what pushes the towing capacity down a great deal. It's easy to get things moving - stopping is another story.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks.

The OME lift hasn't been installed yet. I'm going to try and squeeze 33" in there. If they rub I may end up installing a 1" body lift to compliment the OME lift.
