Question Trade 4cyl manual for 6cyl with bad auto???

Hey guys...I am in the early stages of talking with a guy regarding a trade. The trade would be my 97 4 cyl 5 speed 157K for his 97 6 cyl with a bad 3 speed auto and around 180K. We both have the usual rust on front fenders and back below tail lights. Both run good, but obviously he has a bad auto trans. My questions would be...other things to think about besides engine and trans options???
Can a 3 speed auto from lets say a cherokee or some other Jeep work...or were these 3 speedo autos specifically for the TJ Wrangler?
Could I just as easily throw a manual in from a junkyard or donor with minimal other work needed? Ive taken out motors, trans, tcases and installed them before so I am mechanically inclined. Also if I took the trans out myself and wanted it rebuilt, what is the average cost to do a 3 speed auto? I'd take it out and put it back in so free labor that way at least.
Any comments welcome! Thanks

I had, briefly, a 99 with the auto. On stock(ish) tires I was turning over 3k rpms to maintain highway speed and any attempt to pass someone required a ridiculously long straight stretch due to not having OD.
So, I don't know if you have driven the auto before, but, if not, I would check one out before you use the stock auto.
Conversely, I had a 91 cherokee with the auto and it had OD, a much funner driving experience all around.
I don't know about how difficult it would be to swap in, but I know XJ's can be had around here real cheap, so a swap should be fairly economical.

I think possibly the best option would be to swap in a manual. Is there anyone that has done the swap with a thread on here?

Do a search, I have seen a few threads. I know the biggest issue will be finding a manual computer because the auto one will always be looking for the signal from the auto trans.

Good luck.

Thinking it over after reading many threads, I'm thinking I'll just find a used trans, since that is the cheapest route. And me being poor in college has about 99% to do with it.

So I think I'm going to do it. I would really like to know what other 3 speedo autos out of which other Jeep's would work from a junkyard because we don't have any wranglers in the yards around here.

I don't think any will without modifications... Try car-parts.com, I believe that's the site for a national used parts search.

A few other thoughts of mine...
Definately going with a used auto trans if I can find one, or rebuilding the current one. I don't have the money, time, or nice garage to complete a manual swap.

A few things to note regarding the trade...
His body has less rust and no big dents like mine.
His comes with full doors and half doors. All I have is half doors.
His has A/C, mine doesnt
The other Jeep has had the same owner since 50,000 miles until now (180K)
His is blue, and mine is a terrible bright red. (Not that big of deal but I hate red)
Apparently it has a small 2" spring and shock lift, mine has no lift.
His interior appears to be nicer also. My interior has seat covers to cover up a ripped up drivers seat.
He says it has cruise control but I don't see it on the steering wheel in the pictures and I didn't remember to ask him again if it had cruse or not, was cruise control even an option in 97?

Any other thoughts? Thanks for your help everyone!

Still struggling with this,
His has half and full doors, but he wants to keep the hardtop. I think I'm going to talk him into giving me the hardtop and soft top, after all mine is a running driving vehicle. Am I wrong here?
Otherwise I think I'm going to do it.

Thoughts guys? Please help!

It's really up to you, but I own a 98 tj will 100k miles. 4cyl 5 speed and I'm also in college. I personally wouldn't do the trade. Not sure what year you are, but I'm a freshman and I would love a 6 cyl but don't have the money right now and consider it worthwhile to keep my dependable jeep for a few more years then graduate and buy an lj.

I'd say off hand to keep your rig. My belief has always been to never buy other people's problems. I'm sure you could swap in a aw4 from a Cherokee, but that takes some in depth modification. Don't let people scare ya away from the auto if you do decide to trade, mine does fine on the highway and has plenty of passing power.

Yea, I used to have a 98 with the 3 speed and it turned 32 BFG KM2's fine on the highway. I'm not scared of the power or transmission at all. Who knows, it might be something small inside the transmission that needs to be fixed, not a whole rebuild. The guy told me he dropped his girl off at school, parked it running on a snowbank, came back out, and it wouldn't move he said. I am hoping its the linkage.
But I think I'm not going to trade unless I get the hard top.

He is asking 3500 as is. Is that fair? It has 187k I guess and runs well. A/C too.
I feel mine is also worth 3500...what do you think? No A/C. But runs well.

I've decided to just keep mine since I know it is reliable and know exactly what has and has not been done to it. Thank you for your help everyone that chimed in.

I think that's the best decision. I know it's tempting but you have a solid vehicle. And you're risking that if you trade it. Good work!
