Trade in for a newer but used jeep

Im interested in buying a JK but was wondering if a jeep dealer would give me a better trade in or would it be the same going to any other dealer that had used jeeps on the lot.

You will be money ahead if you sell you Jeep on craislist. Then beat up on the Dealer for the best price, or find one on craigslist so you don't have to pay sales tax.

You'll get the shaft on a trade no matter where you go. Don't go to carmax unless you have a vehicle they have low in stock...on a national level. Otherwise you'll get raped raw. They gave me 15k for my SC hemi ram when I bought it new for 16k but they only had a few single cab hemi rams at the time. But I got a quote there for my mustang and they only offered me 10k when it booked for 19k...they had over 200 in stock nation wide at the time. I about shit myself.

OLD are you saying there is no sales tax when you buy something off craigslist? What state are you from?

I only suggest this if you get one of those Salesman that you feel are going to do everything they can to get way down deep in your wallet...

Coming from a Salesman, I would suggest looking at the market value for your TJ and coming up with a value that you think is fair. (Keeping in mind that dealerships are very expensive to operate and they are there to turn a profit.)
At that point I would go to the dealer that has the Jeep you are interested in and work numbers as if you weren't going to trade.
Then bring in the trade. This will force them to give you a real value on your trade-in rather than just telling you what you want to hear, and marking up the one you want.

Another suggestion. Go to a Local Dealer that deals in a lot of TJs and ask them what they would be interested in giving you for your TJ. Any Dealer that has a good handfull of TJs knows you can't steal them all and will probably be prepared to pay top dollar for a nice Jeep. (I know this is the case for our dealership.)
Then, if the place you decide to buy your JK doesn't offer you much for your TJ you can ask them to in-and-out it to the other dealer who offered more. (That way you will still get a tax break for your trade!)

California will require you to have all the smog equipment in place and functioning and operate to the proper smog specs for the vehicle.

I hope you saved the parts, otherwise you had better try to sell it in a state where there is no smog inspections.

Either of those options are probably not going to be much of a difference. I would detail/clean it up and throw it on CL for a few weeks at a reasonable price. The effort will be worth the few extra thousands you will get out of it.
