Trade in value

So I am thinking of trading in my 99 Sport for an 04 Rubi. My sport is in good condition with about 130k on it. The KKB said I should get around 4 grand for it. I will take no less than $3800, is this a fair price to take or am I in the wrong? I really want the rubi but im not going to just give my sport up for say $2500.

Right now the used car market is in low supply and high demand...the books have not reflected that yet so the listed values are actually lower than the actual values. When I traded in my 98 Dakota, it worth around $900 in fair condition and they gave me $2000 for it.

Also, Jeep Wranglers are in higher demand...for one, they hold their value better than most vehicles and also winter is nearly here so everyone marks up their 4x4's for winter.

Take a look at the retail price dealerships are asking for similar year and models in your area and then dock a couple thousand off that...use that as a starting point. If I remember, I'll try to ask my buddy what their top dollar payout would be for a trade in on a 99 Sport in good shape. I definitely would not take any less than book value for your trade in though. Not unless they give you a helluva deal on the Rubicon.

I thought of selling it myself, but, I dont want to have stupid people calling me all hours of the day and night to set up times to look at it.

s3ntnc3d, if you do find out what the trade in would be, that would be great thanks! And yes, I dont want to take much less than what the KKB says.

Private sales market is flooded...the dealers are experiencing a shortage due to the Cash for Clunkers program and thus the trade-in values are going up.

This is what my friend told me when I was looking for the Jeep...the dealership belongs to his grandpa (my boss) and is now run by his brother...and him somewhat.

He told me the cars at the auction aren't selling for any lower than book value...which means, they either have to mark the vehicles up even higher for resell in order to make a good profit or they have to take less commission and resell them for just a little over what they paid. It also means they are willing to give you much more money for your trade-in, because that's their main source for cheap cars since they can't get them cheap at the auction.

When I told him I wanted a Jeep Wrangler...he flat out said, "If it's not on our lot, we'll get it...but it's not going to come from the auction." He then told me to start surfing Autotrader and Craigslist (preferably from a private seller) and if I find one I like to contact him and they would go and buy it off them and then resell it to me for a little extra to cover their costs. The main reason for this was I had financing through them...and they can do the tax/title stuff for me and just tack it into my loan, leaving me to only have to go and transfer my plates. And that's exactly what we ended up doing...they bought it from some folks about 3 hours from here and then fixed a few minor issues and sold it to me for a little more.

I don't know your market...but if your '99 is clean and shows well, it is worth more than $3800 to the dealer for sure. I agree that selling it outright should bring 5K - 6K + pretty easy. But, if you are determined to just trade it then make sure that you are getting at least $4500 in real money towards the Rubi....
Remember....there are no more TJ's and there never will be any more....in many people's minds, they are the last of the real Wranglers...you don't have to give it a way.

Just curious...how much under real retail book are you paying the dealer for the Rubi?....not so much would be my guess compared to the many other used pieces of iron sitting on their lot. Either way...enjoy the new ride, congrats on the Rubi.

Look at the purchase transaction as 2 transactions:

1) Negotiate a "cash" purchase on the Rubicon. Do your research and get the lowest price you can. Once you shake hands and before actually going into the "finance guy's office"...............
2) Ask them if they'd be interested in your Jeep and then see what price they come up with. If you like the number then go with it. If not, sell it yourself.

If you combine the 2 transactions they will give you more for your Jeep but bump the price up on the Rubicon to make up for it and you'll never know but it will make you "feel" good.

There is a better option called "Cash for Clunkers". Keep your clunker and you'll have cash. Also, I never buy new. You'd be surprised (well, maybe you won't) at how much you lose in buying new. Buy 2-4 years old. My current vehicle (looking for a 2nd vehicle......a Jeep) is an '03 Lexus LS430. Sticker was $75K.......bought with 31,000 miles and perfect condition..........paid $25K....... 2 years later and 50,000 miles it's still worth between $20K-22K.

The rubi im looking at is an 04 with 35k on it. They are asking 17 grand but I know they have room to play. I also agree, the TJ was on if not the best wrangler body style made. I would love to have the 04 but im not just going to give in and give up my 99.

Nice monster by the way. I had a 620 dark, a S2R 800 and my current bike a 08 848 superbike. I love Ducati's and I love to track them.

Yep, you're right about that! Also, I've been told your best move when you plan on trading, is DON'T mention a trade until after you've set a price with the dealer...maybe say something along the lines of, "I'm looking to add another vehicle..." or if they ask you if you have a trade, say, "I'm not sure yet...my wife/son/girlfriend/etc seems to be interested in keeping it", basically say something to make them assume you're probably not gonna trade it. That will keep them from working their numbers with your trade in mind. My transaction was easy...since I'm technically an employee and my friend was my salesman, we both basically laid all our cards out on the table from the get-go. I originally was going to keep my truck and sell it outright, but because of my credit history, the bank refused to finance me unless I had a trade...even though I was already putting $2300 cash down.

A couple years ago I tried to trade in a 2000 VW Jetta VR6. The dealer wanted to give me $2500 on trade, I ended up selling it for $5500. It was worth the pain to sell it private. And I know I should be shot by a firing squad I bought a 2006 Liberty Renegade (piece of shit) anyway. I saw it and fell in love, it was black and shiny and great in the snow. A year and a half later I traded the Liberty in, they paid it off I owed $11500 and then they asked me how much I was putting down. The Liberty only had about 19,000 miles on it. They told me they used edmunds.com and that ripped my Liberty apart. So I say sell it on your own. Because when I go to up grade to a newer Wrangler that's what I'll do.

not blue book

not sure where you people are at but
2k5 should just keep his high school thoughts

banks use NADA for your loan value. Dealers use black book.

Also dont expect the holding out your trade trick to work. I have had to let customers leave before because they didnt like thier trade in value after they pulled that. Im not saying dont try it. You might have to walk away from the deal though. then wait a day or two for them to call you back.

Always be willing to walk. Make sure they have your phone number up front. If you get to the walking stage they will call you back.

This is the best advice anyone can give and is your only real leverage in a sales transaction.
If there is any room left in the deal..your phone will ring!!
If you don't get the call, then you know you were at the bottom for THAT dealer. That does do not mean the next dealer will have the same bottom number for a like vehicle..so keep doing your homework.

BTW...very important....make absolutely sure it is a real RUBI. At least check the vin # and decode it....roll under and check the Diff #'s

The 17K is in the ballpark for an '04 Rubi depending on hard or soft top and how close it is to being all original, which I consider a big plus...good luck

I am very ready to walk away if the deal is not good. I love my 99 sport, and I am not willing to just give it away.

Here is a link of the Rubi I am looking at. I believe it to be real.
