Tranny help

Buddies looking at a 98 4.0 with a 5 speed tranny for CHEAP money

Has high miles ... 233,000 but pretty decent shape and runs sweet.

Problem it wont "hold" first gear .. no matter how hard to try to hold the shifter in 1st it Violently kicks out. I drove it home to show him the rig and just slipped 2nd when i had to at a couple stop signs.

What do the guros here think .. Im thinking a tranny swap would be cheapest .. but open to ideas

Rebuild or swap, it's probably very tired after 233.
