Tranny smoke

Hi everyone. Recently took my TJ offroad for first time. As soon as I put some strain on the tranny it started blowing smoke and had a burning smell. Any ideas on what it could be?

Thanks

yeah manual...it didn't smell like the clutch. Could it possibly be the end seal where the engine meets the transmission?

You sure you didn't just hit a good mud puddle and coat the hanging exhaust loop? Burning mud is a unique smell the first few times you encounter it. And that loop steams quite a bit when splashed.

Does it act like the motor is revving up but you aren't moving any faster?

There is no seal where they meet. There is a bellhousing. I would put my money on burnt clutch smell.

Luk is about the most highly recommended and best clutch that can be installed into our Jeeps, and in fact is what the factory installs. They can and do typically exceed 200K miles of wear even when used hard for offroading.

So far as a smoking clutch, that does not mean the end of the clutch's life which is what I suspect your smoke came from.

I smoked my clutch all the time and continued using it for 50K miles even after this event... that is smoke coming out of my TJ's clutch on The Gatekeeper out in our local Calico desert mountains. When I finally pulled my Luk clutch out at 161K miles thinking it probably needed replacing, I found that it still had plenty of life left on it.
