Transfer case

I just ordered a new transfer case for my 2000 tj. I got it today and has the short shaft while the one that came out of the mine has the long shaft. I have the 4.0 with ax-15 tranny, does anyone know if it will be alright to use?

Are you talking about the output shaft? The type that requires a different style driveshaft connection?

Nope, the input shaft of the transfer that slides over the shaft in the back of the transmission

If it's an issue just swap input gears maybe? I had to swap mine for the 23 splines.

That's a good question because I'm now a little confused on that.

I seem to recall that my TJ's 231 that was originally bolted up to the original 5-speed transmission had a short shaft. I say that because when I converted the 5-speed to an automatic several years ago, the 231's input shaft was too short to seal inside the new automatic's shorter output shaft so it leaked ATF like a sieve. I had to install a longer/extended output shaft seal onto the automatic transmission to seal around the 231's short input shaft.

So I am confused at this point since you say your old 231 has a longer output shaft than the new one has... unless the 231 you received is for a completely different type of vehicle.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I'd probably swap the input shafts so the new 231 is using your old 231's input shaft.

I found a site and it said there were actually 3 different shaft lengths of the np231. Short, medium and long and that the medium length was very rare. It Also said (if I remember correctly) that after 2000 they started using short shafts. It didn't say whether they would interchange or not though. I was wondering if anyone else knew.
