transfer case help

Will a 97 4 cylinder transfer case fit into my 98 6 cylinder without and modifications?

Negative. The 4cyl case will have a 21 spline input and yours has a 23 spline input. You can open the case and swap out the input gear if you feel so inclined.

I'd be concerned about the input shaft spline count if the Jeeps were manuals. I think the ax-5 (4 cylinder standard transmission) had different spline count than the ax-15 (6 cylinder standard transmission).

If both were 3-speed automatics though, i think you'd be OK.
