Transfercase Noises

Sometimes when driving it will sound like rocks are scrapping my transfer case, after a minute or two the noise will go away. This is in 2WD. BTW 4cyl motor if that helps. Does anyone know what it could be ?

When the noise starts try putting it in 4wd and see if it goes away.

Here's a suggestion Jeep TJ Transfer Case Shifter Knocking TSB. This a good right up with pics, not sure if it's your problem but it's a common issue.

Is this issue more of an annoyance or a something that needs to be fixed asap? I think I have it...

It's just a huge annoyance. I was able to mask it with Teflon spray and wd40 but it doesn't last. It's metal on metal rattling but I don't see any long term affects, though it should be addressed eventually.
