Transmission Advice Needed

Since the colder weather started, every time I back-up and shift to drive, it slips for a second or two and then catches. I don't know if it's the cold or just coincidence. Went to shop today and he said try a service first, but said it is definitely a first gear problem. BTW, 2001 4.0, Auto obviously.

Just had warranty work done on my 03 tj 4.0L automatic. It was doing what you described and also slipped when stepping on the gas after coasting in traffic at slow speeds. The valve body was terribly loud - the ticking sounded like a tractor / valve noise / belt noise and air all at the same time. They hooked up the code reader to find a trans slip code and replaced the valve body, bushings, gaskets, and seals. Naturally they put me off until it was leaking trans fluid. Took it in 4 times and they kept telling me there s nothing wrong with it. Until I asked them in writing,"is that a defective part covered by the warranty", they did nothing.

Have you checked to make sure its ATF level is where it should be? To check your own ATF, you need to start the engine and let it warm up, then shift through all the gears, then shift into Neutral and check the ATF level with the engine running. Make sure your Parking brake is set.

Fluid level is good, checked that yesterday. Jeepster, funny you mentioned the noise. I've had this for nearly two years and it has always had a sound that multiple mechanics gave me various diagnosis. It sounds like a diesel at times, some said lifters, some a cracked manifold, another that it was in the transmission. I eventually just left the issue.

It's a mystery noise for sure. They said it was the valve body assembly but the technician notes on the service invoice says the noise was still there after replacing the valve body. Invoice says, "removed trans. Found noise from torque converter. Also found FT pump worn bushing. Valve body noisy"

Sure do like it without that ticking
