Transmission choice

I own a 2001 Wrangler Sport 4.0 5 speed. The transmission was recently destroyed when it went into 4x4 low while being towed behind our motorhome. The transmission shop said the original box is ruined and that the transmission used that year was only used for 3 years and then replaced by a Japanese model. I can save alot of money by having him use a brand new Japanese made direct fit replacement transmission instead of a rebuilt original type unit from Jeep. This is my wifes truck with 100k and it has never seen a dirt road and almost never used in 4x4. I appreciate some feedback from those who obviously know more than me in this area. Thanks

I dont get it,sounds like your Tcase exploded not your trans.. dumping it on the freeway would likley make it go BOOM and your transmission should have been in neutral i think. id get a second opinion,

I assumed the same thing, but I was told the transmission spins even in neutral but gets no lube when tcase is in low. They removed the trans and it looks like a nuclear meltdown I was told. So far tcase seems ok. Just not sure whats up with the difference in price so large with the Japanese trans and how it would affect the feel when shifting?

Do you know exactly what Japanese transmission model number they are talking about installing? Possibly an Aisin AX-15? If so, you'd be fine with that transmission.

By the way, the transmission should never be left in Neutral for flat towing because it is not supposed to spin while you are flat towing the Jeep because the transmission does not get any lubrication while being flat towed. For flat towing, the transmission is supposed to be in gear, like 1st for a manual or Park for an automatic, with the transfer case in Neutral. You can confirm this with your Jeep's owners manual.
When you have a choice, buy American.

You most likey had the NV3550, which was a fine tranny. As stated the AX-15 will work, though I would see what the cost difference is between the two.

Look at for what they charge for a AX-15. It may be cheaper than what the tranny shop is charging
