Transmission Grindage

Hopefully, I'll have more luck getting some info with this thread.

In short, I've a '99 with the 2.5L I4 and an AX-5 tranny. Yes, I know they're not the most robust beasts in the world.

Recently, when I'm downshifting into 2nd at anything over 1k RPM, there's a noticeably loud grinding sound before it pops in, which requires more force than it used to. Going UP through the gears presents no problem, and once I let the RPMs drop below about 1k, it's better.

Are my synchros heading south? Any kind of additives I should be looking at?

Thanks, I hope, for your help.

Scott

Sounds like synchros to me. Try double clutching to see if it goes away? It's a great diagnostic for synchros that noone seems to use.

If they're worn out then there's not much you can do short of rebuilding, but if the problem is just starting you may be able to get some more miles out of them by changing the transmission fluid with a lube specifically designed for brass synchros. It will say "safe for yellow metals" on the back label.
