I have searched for a clear answer on this...but found nothing. Sorry if there already is one and I missed it.
I have a 2001 4.0L with a manual transmission.
Is it normal for the transmission to make low tone whine in first gear? It doesn't matter if I am accelerating, decelerating, and no particular RPM. No other symptoms just a whine.
Mine has been talking to me for 2.5 years. I pulled and couldn't find anything wrong, I then had a tranny shop check it out. I had them put in all new bearing since it was open. It still wines mine does it in first and 2nd. I have heard of people putting in royal purpal synchromesh and getting rid of it.(I just turn up the radio or take the top and doors off and you can't hear it anymore)
Mine whines like crazy, particularly when downshifting into 1st. Typically, I'll approach a light or stop sign, and clutch while I shift into 1st (to get ready to pull out from dead stop...after I stop). Whenever I do this, it whines whines whines. People riding with me ask about it every time. I tell them "It's a Jeep Thing...You Wouldn't Understand".
Mine sounds like it has a supercharger on it.
I have been driving it like this for 80,000k's.
Sounds cool.
