Transmission question... Basically 5spd VS. Auto

I personally owned a 02 X with a 5spd because after searching I found the manual was a better tranny.

Now im looking for my girlfriend and all we're finding is auto's. Can someone fill me in on what I should look out for, or should I just stay away like i've been told before??? Thanks!

i'm a manual trans guy, but i've never told anyone to stay away from the auto, why have you heard that?

if you want a manual though, hold out till you find one.

and the discussion has been had a bunch on auto vs. manual, so i don't think we need to start that again, that fun discussion can be viewed in an easy search. it is fun though

the auto vs. manual debate is sure to pop up in here, but it all comes down to which you (or your gf) like better. my tj (my dd) is an auto and i like it better that way. i don't have to worry about shifting or traffic. it is just more convenient for me. my trail rig is a manual and i am liking it more and more each time i go on the trail.

I enjoy the auto after years of 5spds.... nice that anybody can drive it if need on the trail, and in heavy on road traffic.. hands down winner... nothing wrong the the TJ auto, will last a long time.

I've just heard of reliability issues with the auto??? My XJ is auto with 117k on the clock & so far so good. Auto would be better for daily driving, but we're looking for longevity & reliability. Hopefully this helps...

the auto will last as long as you want it to. you just have to treat it right, and keep it serviced.

again people, i don't think the op is asking for the debate again.

2002 and older TJs use a 32RH 3-speed automatic that does not have an overdrive. Auto trannies don't come any more bulletproof than the 32RH.

2003 and newer TJs use a 42RLE 4-speed automatic so it includes an overdrive which is better for highway use than the 32RH (like I converted my TJ's 5-speed to) is.

Just keep the ATF fluid changed per schedule and run a synthetic ATF+4 and both will hold up fine. Neither has a reliability issue.

Personally, while I'd have nothing but a manual for a sports car, an automatic is great in a Jeep. Most rock crawling competitors started using automatics years ago, they're awesome offroad and give 2-3X more low-end torque... which is just one of several reasons why I converted to an automatic in my TJ two years ago.

Like I've stated in all the other manual vs. auto debates, er a I mean discussions, I prefer a manual. I've had built Jeeps with both, but just prefer the manual. I recently did a stock 5 speed swap over to a SM 465 in my '97, and I about nut up every time I drive the thing. It sounds just like a UPS truck. And at almost 130:1, it wheels amazingly well. If you do decide to go with a manual and are going to use it for serious wheeling, make sure you put in a hand throttle. They are very easy to install and will make the manual experience way easier.

is the 42RLE 4-speed automatic the same as the Cherokee's?

No serious wheeling, more of a DD for the gf. She likes manual but is open to a auto.
