transmission swap info on a 98 jeep wrangler

Hello, I have a 1998 jeep wrangler that is standard . I want to let her start using it so I can fix her 1989 jeep up, for us. The trouble is that my jeep is a standard and she can not drive it safely. I would like to know what automatic transmission will fit and what all parts I am going to need to get to make it work. I am a mechanic for over 20 yrs. and have a welder if I need it. But have not done one of these conversions in a jeep before .Can some body shed some light on this please?

I swapped an AW4 from a Cherokee into my TJ. I love it!

Stu Olson has three different write-ups on his website showing how to do the swap:

AW-4 Transmission Swap - 1

AW-4 Transmission Swap - 1

My question is why Jeep/Chrysler never put the AW4 in the tj in the first place. Nice to see someone put an AW4 in a tj, had that tranny in my xj and loved it

It could have to do with it's length. It's about an inch longer than the NV3550. I have a SYE and a CV style driveshaft and the angle is pretty steep.
