Two questions: Tops and abs

I am new to Wranglers, and have two unrelated questions. About my sons 1999, four cylinder, five speed.

I have to replace the soft top. I have found a variety of options and a range of prices. I am looking for some recommendations for what brand of top and vendors.

The ABS quit working the other day. The brakes work fine other than no ABS.
I checked the fuse which is fine. I check for trouble codes w/ code reader all read normal. If this was my daily driver I would not sweat it, but my son uses it daily.

Any suggestions what to check next?

Bestop is always a quality choice for softops.. Others can speak to which one's they have and like.. Not having ABS is good news or at least I think it is.. So congrats to you and your son..

WELCOME TO WF

for the top, i would go with the bestop sunrider. heres one on quadratec:
Bestop Sunrider Soft Tops - Quadratec bestop makes a really good replacement soft top, and every day i wish i could flip the front half of the top back like that.

as far as the ABS goes, make sure you check the fuse behind the dash AND the one in the main fuse panel in the engine bay. my jeep never had ABS from the factory, and i get by just fine without it. you just have to be aware that you dont have it, and remember to pump if you are sliding. not to mention downshifting helps a ton

On the ABS. Is the ABS light on? Other than that, what makes you think the ABS went out.

Bestop Sunrider

I am so satisfied with my Bestop Sunrider. Expensive, yes, but if you take care of it, you will have years of service from it.
You will really appreciate the fit - it is very well tailored.
The Sunrider flip open feature is totally worth the extra cost. Particularly in an area like mine, with changeable weather.

Best of luck !

similarly, don't wear halfshirts, of course they're not popular on guys since the late 1980s anyway but they're still popular on girls -- but avoid if you have flabby abs.

i hope my post helps.
oh wait , of course it doesn't.

If you dont like going completely topless and baking in direct sunlight (like me). Then I suggest the Rampage frameless top or bestop trektop. They both are able to remove the rear windows and keep the top portion on for some shade from the sun. Only the Rampage top allows you to store the windows inside the top for safe and easy keeping. heres some pics of the Rampage Frameless top. The top is easy to put up or down in about 5 min either way. hope this helps with the top question sorry cant help with the ABS tho.

I take it you like the Rampage frameless then? I've been looking at that top for a year now and need to get one soon cuz my top is starting to go south on me. And love your "Rubiclone" decal. Where did you get it

Yea I highly recommend the rampage top. As for the Decal I had it made up from one of those stores on ebay. Had never seen one before and now I see other people selling them... should have gotten it patented lol.

Find a best top soft top on cl, then add the diy sunrider flip top kit for only $60.00. Did it myself in 20 mins, saved hundreds on buying the sunrider top. here is my converted top.FINAL CLOSEOUT-REDUCED! 1997-06 JEEP WRANGLER DIY Flip-Top SOFT-TOP SUNROOF Kit

If you already have an OEM soft top, and the frame is in good shape. Just get the Bestop Replace A Top replacement fabric.

Don't get that one. It's based on the Bestop (old) Supertop frame which is a PITA. The newer Supertop NX is based on the OEM frame and has the sunrider feature.

I saw that kit a wile ago as well as posts for DIY sunriders and went ahead and made my own with a set of softop knuckles and a lock down pin.

The ABS light does not come on when starting as it did before. I also tried hard stops at various speeds all four wheels locked up. This is my son's daily driver he came home the other day telling me he had skidded when he had to stop suddenly because the ABS did not engage. I am a reasonably experience shade tree wrench turner, but was at a loss at what to check after the fuses and the diagnostic scanner.

Thanks for all the top suggestions. The frame is in good shape so a new cover sounds like the best way to go. Time to shop for a bestop fabric kit

I think it is anything under 5 or 10 MPH the ABS will not work. I skid in snow all the time at slow speeds. I had the ABS light come on, but once it was off I could not read codes. Only when the ABS was lit up. I lost the RR wheel sensor. All sensors are over $100 if you have to replace. If all 4 lock up, it will not work. ABS does not work that way.

Thanks at least I have a place to look now. The wheels only locked when I tried a hard stop above 35MPH

Most definitely agree, the cost between all new hardware and top vs. just the fabric can run you double cost wise. You might want to compare the hardware you have now with the soft top adviser on Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories & Jeep Wrangler Parts From The Jeep Parts Experts - Quadratec to make sure a previous owner didn't swap away from factory, which would make a factory fabric not work anymore.

I say that because I had a hardtop only when i bought mine, and bought a Rampage top with hardware, and the hardware is completely different from factory and wont take a Bestop replace a top due to the mounting differences of the framework

Jeep replacement soft top application guide - Quadratec
