If you take your time, one will eventually pop up. Timing is a huge part of it as well. Since summer is right around the corner, prices are going to stay pretty high. Once fall hits in and if gas prices stay the same, they'll start dropin in prices quickly.

Buying one from someone you know is def the way to go. this way you know how the jeep was driven/maintained and they usually give you a better deal then they would someone else. $2,500 for a 98 TJ w/ 35k all summer miles w/ a fairly new soft top.

I have been buying and selling cars (professionally and privately) for years. It's all about the seller and thier precieved value for the vehicle. For every guy who thinks his '99 with 100k is worth $10,000, there is another who would take $3,000. Keep in mind that most sellers will take less, sometimes much less than what they are asking.

The real "value" of course is somewhere (well, it's whatever someone will pay) in between.

If you are looking at '97-'02ish year TJ's, I would have $5,000 ready to spend and I would offer that assuming the vehicle doesn't need a ton of work and the mileage is around 100k.

I agree that you have to be patient. I was looking for 3 months before I could find a 6 cylinder tj for under 6k. Stock w/ 160k miles. Its been the only 6 cylinder tj under 8k i have seen around here. Im just south of Seattle, Washington by the way.

Well it's not v6 but I got a 4cyl 2.5l 5spd manual with 89k for the low low price of (drum roll) 5 grand even.
Very happy with the purchase. Recently turned my first thousand

as with all used vehicles: compare, compare, compare.....be patient....and never forget that if you are smart, you will get what you paid for.

i've seen plenty of beaten down, rusted, neglected TJ's for 5 grand and under....none were worth the hassle of owning. but there's always that exception to the rule.

at some point though you have to stop being too worried about making that perfect "i- stole-this-one" buy and just be satisfied with owning one that was purchsed at a fair price.

The trend is see is it's happening in other states than Florida, perhaps becuase we have Ideal Jeep weather, beaches, swamps and no snow there more in demand.
I live in Central Florida and I watch for Jeeps for sale at all times I also work at a new car dealership and keep my eyes open for a deal. I never see Wranglers sell for less than 10-12k no matter the mileage or condition.

I'm pretty sure if I had 25k to spare and went where-ever and bought 5 of these 5k TJ's I could bring them down here and double my money EASY!

I bought mine in the Fall for $4,000. 99 TJ SE with 60,000 mikes on a rebuilt engine by Jasper.

With a little tune up and a bit of paint it has gone from this

To this and runs like a champ. Gotten me through several snow storms.

Last summer I bought the same jeep (60th an. edition) except it was silverstone and not black version, both tops and the PO put on 31's brand new a week before I bought the the jeep from him for 6.5K... Which is odd in itself i guess for prices. BTW That was a cool best top with dual factor in your profile section!! I'd sell both tops I have for a trade on that.

Wow this thread was brought back from the dead (posted in 2011) but I just had to say, that is one nice looking Grabber Orange Jeep mrobinso! As for the thread, I got my Jeep (97 4.0L Sahara w/ 120k) for $7k. It was in October a few years ago...the dealer, which is a friend of the family, told me if it was in the spring he would have asked an extra $900 for it. And because it was a Jeep he wasn't willing to drop the price at all. So timing is a big factor where I live...as it will be in most places that have "seasons", unlike Florida. (My sister lives in Charleston, SC and TJ's go for a premium there too.)

I bought my '05 LJ for $4000 with 42K on it. I did sink a couple of thousand into her to get her to this point with several thousand more in parts to install that are sitting in my garage.

It depends, does it have full doors, hard top and soft top? Does it have cruise, ac and a Dana 44 rear axle? If it has all those things....I would say it's a fair deal for our area. If not I would keep looking. Also you may want to find out what brand 4" lift it has and if its done correctly....and hope it's not just a huge body lift.
