Unkown hardtop, need advice

Found a hardtop for my TJ but the person selling it doesn't know what year model it fits. How can I tell if it will fit mine and what kind of hardware am I gonna need?? How expensive is the hardware also?

Any hardtop in the 97 to 06 years will fit except obviously the LJ top and that is easy to spot by the length. As far as basic hardware to install is concerned you only need the fasteners to bolt it to your tub. The top clips to the windshield frame just like the soft top. If your Jeep was not originally a hardtop then you may want to explore the requirements necessary to activate the rear wiper/washer and defroster, but these are not necessary to enjoy it.

Full doors are nice but not necessary, half doors with uppers will work fine without any additional hardware.

97-06 hard tops will fit all years. But, 97-02 there is a vent on both side towards the back of the top. 03-06 there is no vent. 03-06 the vent in made into the tailgate. If you put a 03-06 top on a 97-02 jeep you may have issues closing the doors.

If your willing to do the work it might be worth a shot buying a broken one. I bought mine with cracks in the rear corners and a busted out back glass for 150 bucks. After a 250 dollar back glass , paint, fiberglass work and Bondo, I managed to save myself about 500 dollars. I wired everything myself and it was a fun project. But yeah I bought a 97 top and it fit perfect on my 03. I like the side vents on the 97-02 tops I think they look neat.

I had an 05 top on my 98 with no closing issues. Although me not having some of the drain plugs in probably helped with the pressure.

Thanks I appreciate the info. I have an 04 so maybe this one will be no problem. The top is in good condition and he's only asking $100 and I may be able to get it for $75. If nothing else I could resale it and make a couple extra dollars lol.

Just make sure it's not a YJ hardtop. They look similar, but geometrically the YJ is a tad longer. If your unsure, post some pictures here and we should be able to confirm what year the top is and what it will fit.

X2 ^^ YJ tops are usually much cheaper. A TJ top in good condition runs about 1000 here in NW Pa. I would be careful. Something fishy is going on.

97-06 TJ tops have the clamps for the windshield. YJ/CJ have screws.

You also need to consider if this is an OEM hardtop or aftermarket. I'd go ahead and buy it for that price and just try it to see if it fits. If not then just sell it and pocket a profit. Six bolts - 3 on each side - plus flat washers and nuts hold on a TJ top along the sides. Can't remember exact sizes but bolts are maybe 5/16-18 by 1-1/2" long. As has already been said the front should have two latches that clamp it to the top of the windshield. Some might have an extra latch in the center that hooks to the strap loop at the top of the windshield.

Checked the top out. It had no rear window and only minor defects that some fiberglass bondo will fix. I think even at the cheap price replacing the rear window will still make it a good buy. Thanks for all the input.

My rear window was 250 bucks. Make sure you get as much of the back hardware as possible . I had to fab up some brackets to hold the strut supports to the glass. Kind of a pain but it works great.
