Upgrade alternator?

Would it be recommened to upgrade to a larger capacity alternator to run the "normal electrical system" + a pair of 130 watt daylighters and a M8000 winch on an 06 Rubi or can I just stay stock?

With the Winch, I'd say def. Upgrade.

I have the Mean Green Alternator on mine, and the Voltage doesn't even Flicker when I have all my Lights On. And I have 11 of them.

The factory 117 amp alternator is definitely fine for both of those items, very few ever bother upgrading their alternator for those two common add-ons. No alternator can keep up with a winch's potential >400 amp draw anyway.

I'll just say that considering all the upgrades on my TJ, that if it actually needed a higher output alternator to power everything including my regular use of my winch, it'd have one. I get by perfectly well on just one battery too... even during those times I have had to winch my TJ off the trail when for various reasons I couldn't start the engine.

No need. Wast of money... unless you planing on running 10 130w KC's and 2 winches and 4 12' subs....

And I'd listen to Jerry... As his title says "Knows a couple things..."

You can swap in a Durango alternator for more amps. If your stock alternator is still working fine I wouldn't worry about it though. Once your stock alternator craps out then I would look into it. You shouldn't need to worry about it anytime soon though on an 06.

I had a OE nippo 136amp sitting around for a few years so I swaped a few parts of with my 117 so it would plug in directly and threw it on because I was bored one day. I just figured as electrically dependent as the newer vehicles are what could it hurt being I have a winch ,Hella extra vision headlights, stereo amps etc This same alt was part of the heavy duty charging system in all of my Dodge Rams present and past. I also switched the wire from the alternator to the PDC ,to the battery to a 4 gauge wire with a fuse, I did notice my dash gauge reads a hair higher now right on 14 exactly now so all said and done it was a worth while upgrade. If you do upgrade make sure that the replacement actually puts out more at idle than what you have as that seems to be where charging issues are noticed at low rpm . some of the aftermarket alternators don't do not put out what you would think at low rpm . A good battery like my Sears Platinum helps also

You don't need to... I have 65 watt head lights, fog lights, rigid dullys,and hella 55 watt lights also a Smitty build 10000 winch and im running a factory alternator

I concur with Jerry... In the old days, yes upgrade. But with today's technology no need.. The last time I had to upgrade hmmm ... Swapped in a 12 volt alternator for a 6 volt generator... That generator even had a flip lid to add oil.. Needless to say it was quite a project changing everything over from 6 volt to 12. We are all very fortunate today with the new alternators, and starters.. Back in the day, you'd be lucky to get 40,000 miles out of each..

My first two cars had 6 volt systems and you had to hold the RPMs up a tad at night on my '66 VW at stop lights to keep the headlights on at full brightness. I had to install a separate 12 volt battery to power my new Motorola AM/FM car radio which was a big deal back then.

I would upgrade for sure and put in a yellow top deep cycle battery also if your running a winch... as you will eventually run your battery flat... Trust me, I've done it once before...

You know I was thinking the same thing on the battery replacement and when I looked up the called for battery and compared it to the yellow top optima..the ca were the same at 1000 and the res capicity for the replacement was 110 min and the resverve for the optima was only 100, I just found that interesting...I just replaced the battery 18 months ago so it will stay for now. Probably going to stick with Jerry's recomendation and not change the alternator just yet unless I put a lot more lights on later or this alternator takes a dump...only have 30,000 miles on her so that might be awhile also.

dual battery

If you are planning on getting into situations where you will likely deplete the standard battery, then to me the only option is a 2nd battery. A single battery is going to get depleted, and when it does, no run. With the dual battery you can run the winch into the ground and still be able to run and recharge.

I put in dual alternators (used A/C location) which gives several advantages.

Better do a bit of research before plunking down the bennies for a yellow top.. Sears Platinum ( Re-badged Odyssey) is far better, and much more dependable.. Yellow tops are currently suffering very high failure rates..
